GRADE 12 Course Selection
2
GRAD 2009
3
Required Courses
4
How many credits?
  • You will need 80 credits by the end of Grade 12
    to graduate.
  • 48 credits are required courses.
  • 28 are electives.
  • 4 credits are FAAS Fine Arts/Applied Skills
    any grade level.
  • All students must do a Grad Transition Interview.
  • 80 hours of moderate physical activity.
  • 30 hours of volunteer or work experience.
  • Grad Transition Plan (done in Planning 10B)
  • If you fail a required Grade 10 or 11 course you
must repeat it until you pass. If you are in
Grade 12 but are missing Grade 10 credits you
    cannot graduate.

5
Graduation Myth 1
  • Do I have to take PE11 to graduate?
  • No, but you do need 80 hours of physical activity
    for your Grad Transition interview.

6
Graduation Myth 2
  • Do I need to take Portfolio 12?
  • No, Portfolio 12 as a graduation requirement no
longer exists, but there is a required Grad
Transition Interview. You must do this to
    graduate.

7
What is the Grad Transition Interview?
  • Prior to graduation, every grade 12 student must
participate in an exit interview. This interview
will include at a minimum a presentation
    discussing the students transition plan,
evidence of 80 hours of physical activity, 30
hours of community service or work experience,
and reflections and evidence on their strengths,
achievements and areas of interest. Students
must complete these requirements to receive the
    four credits required for graduation.

8
Graduation Myth 3
  • Do I need a grade 11 language to graduate?
  • No. Some post-secondary institutions require you
to have a grade 11 language for admission, some
accept a beginners language 11 and all the rest
    dont require it.
  • For example UBC Van you need a language 11 to
get in, UBC-O you dont but you must take a
language before finishing a degree program.

9
Graduation Myth 4
  • Do I need four provincial exams to graduate?
  • No! In addition to English 12 or Communications
12 you must have three other Grade 12 courses.
  • These can include academic courses such as
History 12 and non-academic courses such as PE12.
  • You must write a provincial exam for EN12 or
COM12. All other grade 12 exams are optional.
If FNS12 is your Socials 11 grad requirement you
    must write the provincial exam.
  • Some post-secondary institutions still require
provincial exams for admission purposes and
    others for specific programs.

10

Ordering Your Choices
  • Since time-tabling is a complex process, you may
not get all the courses you want. When selecting
your electives, choose four courses and then
indicate which is your first, second, third and
fourth choice so that we can endeavour to get you
    the classes you want.

46
For Example
  • Acting 12 1st choice
  • French 12 2nd choice
  • Carpentry 12 3rd choice

  • If your first choice does not fit the timetable,
your second choice will be entered as the next
    class and so on.

47
Your Choices Are Important!
  • The timetable is based on how many students sign
    up for classes.
  • If you dont sign up for a course and there are
too few students who do, the course will not be
    offered in the next year.
  • If you do not indicates your 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th
choices are your timetable will be created for
    you.

48
Can I Change My Classes?
  • Once the timetable is created (June) and you are
given your initial schedule, you can change your
    classes.
  • Changing of classes is based on whether there is
room in the course and the nature of the course.
  • Any changes have to be okayed by your parent or
    guardian.

49
What Happens If I Fail A Class?
  • If you fail English 12 or Communications 12 you
    must repeat the course.
  • If you fail any other required course you must
    repeat that course.
  • If you fail an elective course you must check
with the counsellors to see if you have enough
    credits to graduate.

Can I Have A Spare/Study Block?

    a minimum of 8 classes.
