Army Modernization Strategy
  • Rapidly field the best new equipment to the
    Current Force
  • Upgrade and modernize existing systems
  • Incorporate new technologies derived from Future
    Combat Systems (FCS)
  • Field FCS leading-edge technologies across the
Army, and fully equip FCS Brigade Combat
    Teams (BCTs)

Transformation Facer 2
Excalibur 155mm GPS guided Artillery
Munitions DCGS-A Distributed Common Ground
System-Army. Primary System for tasking,
processing, correlating, integrating, exploiting,
and disseminating Intelligence. DCGS-A is the
Intel, Surv, Recon gateway to Joint ,
Interagency, allied, coalition, and national
data. WIN-T Warfighter Information
Network-Tactical. Is Armys fully mobile,
tactical communications system for reliable
secure, and seamless video, data, imagery, and
voice services. MRM Mid-Range Munition. 120mm
gun launched precision-guided munition, for the
Future Combat System (FCS) Mounted Combat Systems
(MCS) vehicle. Beyond Line-of-Sight 8K. GSS
Ground Soldier System. GSS will provide the
Soldier the ability to see first, understand
first, act first and finish decisively. Through
this effort, the Army provides Soldiers safe,
efficient, modern support items to replace
antiquated equipment. JTRS Joint Tactical
Radio System. JTRS is a Defense Department-wide
initiative to develop a family of revolutionary
software-programmable tactical radios that will
provide the warfighter with voice, data and video
communications, as well as interoperability
across the joint battlespace. Current radio
systems lack interoperability across the spectrum
and have insufficient bandwidth to meet present
and future communications challenges. JTRS AMF
Airborne and Maritime/Fixed Station GMR
Ground Mobile Radios HMS Handheld, Manpack,
Small form fit. JLTV Joint Light Tactical
Vehicle is a family of vehicles that address
current capabilities gaps, to increase force
protection, survivability, fuel-efficiency,
capacity, maneuverability and automotive safety
balanced with the total cost of ownership.
Vehicles also must meet current weight and
dimension requirements for transportability
aboard ships and aircraft.

FCS Facer Slide
  • The MGV suite of vehicles is the heart and body
of the Network Centric Future Brigade Combat Team
force. Without MGVs there is no System of
Systems approach. The majority of the sensors in
the FCS Brigade Combat Team are in the MGV. The
MGVs employ 70-80 common chassis and a common
    15-piece tool kit.
  • The MGVs will have better armor protection than
current vehicles. FCS technology is driving the
advance protection we are putting on systems
    today.
  • Additionally, as technology matures we are
    spinning-out critical capabilities through the
Army Evaluation Task Force to the rest of the
    Army as fast as possible.
  • The information systems and the intelligence
systems that support an FCS brigade combat team
will enable Soldiers to avoid detection and avoid
being hit they will know what is around the
    next block or hill.
  • The passing of data from sensors, UAV's , UGV's ,
UGS and other platforms is not relayed by a radio
call but appears on their Common Operating
Picture screen inside the MGV's. Real time data
not something passed through layers of relays.
  • The FCS (BCT) sends unmanned platforms forward
first sensing while gaining data and information
that is instantly passed to all in sector.
  • Should a MGV receive fire its Active Protection
System reacts and removes the threat without
    damage to the system.

Facer FCS- Comparative MeasurementsWhat we see
so farFCS BCT compared to Heavy BCT
  • Deployability FCS BCT deploys faster and
builds combat power more rapidly. Enables the
earlier shift of strategic lift assets to other
    priorities.
  • Air FCS Bn more than 2 times sooner FBCT more
than 1.5 days sooner (aircraft MOG and
availability limits benefit at BCT level).
  • Air sorties FCS Bn 49 versus Heavy Bn 107 FCS
    BCT 569 versus 823
  • Sea One less FSS or JHSS and 1-3 days faster
    than HBCT
  • Enable Joint Operations The ability of the FCS
BCT to acquire significantly more threat targets,
earlier in the operation, enhances the efficiency
of joint fires and results in more threat kills
    earlier.
  • Sustainability In recent analyses, compared to
the FCS BCT, the HBCT required 3-6 times the
number of truck loads to haul repair parts,
consumed 5000-10,000 more gallons of fuel a day,
and required up to 4 times the number of mechanic
    man-hours.
  • Lethality FCS BCT killed threats earlier and at
longer ranges (1.5 to 4 times as much gt3KM).
  • Dominant Maneuver FCS BCT able to affect a
larger area of operations (about twice as large
AO) and provides commanders with more options for
executing missions. FCS BCT completes missions
    up to 30 faster.

Compared to the HBCT, the FCS BCT offers the
commander more options to achieve mission
success, more quickly, with less demand on
sustainment.
