    ELECTIONS DEPARTMENT

2
  • CURRENT SITUATION
  • 384 poll workers are hired to work on election
day and 64 of these workers hold the position as
Inspector, the person in charge of the polling
    location
  • Every election cycle we loose a minimum of 10 to
12 inspectors that choose to retire from the
    election boards.
  • Finding new inspectors is difficult because many
people feel they are unable to
  • Take on the added responsibility of the
    inspector.
  • Fear of the precinct tabulator (computer).
  • Work the long hours for the low pay.

3
  • The Board of Supervisors is being asked for
authorization to seek out unclassified employees
willing to volunteer as poll workers and be
trained for the position of inspector in a
polling location within the area of their
    residence.
  • Advantages to using unclassified employees are
  • An employee with management experience.
  • Knowledge of computers to run precinct
    tabulator.
  • A person with knowledge of Cochise County.
  • Familiar with long hours and responsibility.
  • Organization and leadership skills.
  • Other counties have successfully used
    unclassified employees to work elections.

4
  • It is hoped that the Elections Department can
train a pool of county employees willing to do
their civic duty for major election cycles.
