A CHECK LIST FOR SURVIVAL
  • List and photograph or videotape valuable
    property.
  • Review the status of your automobile, flood, home
    owners or renters insurance overages.
  • Take a First Aid and CPR course or refresher.
  • Identify primary and alternate evacuation routes
    to a safe location.
  • Discuss your family's plans for a disaster.
  • Assemble a family Disaster Supply Kit (see
    checklist on page 8) and store it in safe room,
    preferably in the room you will go to if a
    hurricane hits.
  • Identify an out-of-state relative or friend as
    your family contact.
  • Learn the storm history and elevation of your
    area to determine if evacuation would be
    necessary contact your local Emergency Management
    Agency for guidance.
  • Prepare an emergency plan for family members and
    those who are elderly, who have disabilities or
    have special needs.
  • Make provisions for pets in case of an
    evacuation. Pets are not allowed in shelters.
  • Learn how to turn off utilities in case you need
    to evacuate.
  • Contact your children's schools or day care
    centers to find out about their emergency plans.
  • Learn what to do before, during, and after a
    hurricane.

BEFORE THE STORM
  • Evaluate your home's risk to withstand flood
    waters and high winds.
  • Be familiar with evacuation routes, prepare to
    leave in advance.
  • Consider evacuating to a family or friends home
    out of the hazard area.
  • Consider evacuating to a hotel out of the hazard
    area.
  • Know the location of emergency shelters.
  • Make arrangements for family pets, shelters
    cannot accept pets.
  • Clearly mark all electrical breakers, gas and
    water shut offs.
  • Evaluate your homeowners / renters insurance
    coverage.
  • Evaluate the need for a separate policy for flood
    insurance.
  • Install reinforcements to windows, double doors
    and garage doors.
  • Remove / secure all outdoor furniture, toys,
    trashcans, etc.
  • Remove dead limbs from trees surrounding your
    home.
  • Secure all recreational trailers and boats.
  • Assemble adequate emergency supplies such as
    water, food, medications.
  • Maintain a battery operated radio, flashlights
    and fresh supply of batteries.

DURING THE STORM
  • Closely monitor radio, TV and National Weather
    Service for official information. (162.550 for
    our area)
  • All citizens living in mobile homes or flood
    prone areas -- EVACUATE!
  • Notify neighbors and family members if you plan
    to evacuate.
  • If not evacuating, stay inside in an interior
    room away from all windows.
  • Turn your refrigerator to maximum cold, and open
    only when necessary.
  • Unplug all non-essential appliances.
  • Fill bathtub and any available clean containers
    with water.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so by the
    authorities.

AFTER THE STORM
  • Continue to monitor radio and TV for official
    information.
  • If you evacuated, wait until your area is
    officially declared safe to re-enter.
  • Utilize the "Buddy System", check on neighbors
    and the elderly.
  • Do not drive into flood areas.
  • Check gas, water and electrical lines for damage.
  • Do not drink or use tap water until it has been
    tested for contamination.
  • In the absence of electricity, use flashlights
    not candles to inspect for damage.
  • Use telephone only to report life threatening
    emergencies.
