4Reminder the Methuselah Mouse Postponement and
Reversal prizes Postponement Prize awarded to
the creator of a Mus musculus whose age at death
was higher than any weve heard of
previously Prize fund (margin of victory /
new record) Reversal Prize awarded to age at
death plus age of onset of any treatment was
higher Prize calculated as above Reversal Prize
has attracted most donations so far
5- Criticisms of the PP and RP
- They reward a single mouse -- a statistical
outlier -- so do not necessarily promote work of
scientific significance. - The RP might reward extension of frail lifespan
it should only reward restoration of youth.
6- Solution The Rejuvenation Prize
- - Awarded not for an individual mouse but for a
published study - - Intervention must begin in second half of
controls life - - A range of biomarkers of aging must be reversed
by onset - Age achieved is mean of longest-lived 10
7June 2003 Postponement Prize inaugural award
8November 9 2003 Reversal Prize inaugural award
9November 21 2003 Rejuvenation Prize inaugural

20Highlights of recent research news
The stem cell transplantation was performed on
Oct. 12 this year and in just three weeks she
started to walk with the help of a walker The
patients lower limbs were paralyzed after an
accident in 1985 damaged her lower back and hips.
Afterward she spent her life in bed or in a
wheelchair. For the unprecedented clinical test,
the scientists isolated stem cells from umbilical
cord blood and then injected them into the
damaged part of the spinal cord. The sensory and
motor nerves of the patient started to improve 15
days after the operation and she could move her
hips. After 25 days, her feet responded to
stimulation.
