in your own building.

Start Something?
  • After school program headed up by 2 teachers and
    myself.
  • Focused on 5th and 6th grade participants.
  • Students developed Peer Tutoring.
  • Idea spread to a during-school program for the
    whole school!

6
Heres How It Worked
  • The school was a K-6 school so we used 4th, 5th
and 6th graders as our tutors.
  • The program took place at lunch.
  • Older students would go to the younger students
classroom to pick them up for lunch. Following
eating, they would retreat to a classroom where
    they would study together.

How Did We Get Teachers Onboard?
12
Outstanding Benefits!
  • All the kids involved became excited to meet each
week, thus their excitement for learning was
    growing.
  • The tutors learned skills in time management,
    communication, and patience.
  • The kids felt that they were being rewarded by
having a tutor I dont believe most of them even
    realized they were studying!

13
Benefits, Cont.
  • Teachers said they saw improvements in their
students grades as well as desire to do better
(a couple teachers used the tutoring time as a
reward to get students to complete work in the
    classroom).
  • All of this took place during the school day so
it didnt require any extra time on my or the
    teachers parts.

14
Benefits, Cont.
  • Parents appreciated the relationships being built
    within the school as well.
  • We had many students who would go home to empty
houses involved in this program and the older
kids were great models for the younger kids to
    look up to.
  • Educational and social skills were developed and
    nurtured throughout this free program.
