Rules
  • Conditions are laid down in BR68/F
  • Amateur Radio (Foundation) Licence Terms,
    Provisions and Limitations Booklet
  • Higher license grades have their own version of
    BR68
  • Contacts must only be with other licensed
    amateurs
  • Rights, rules, inspection and Close Down etc are
    all ultimately on the authority of Ofcom
  • Ofcom is the statutory regulator which superceded
    the Radiocommunications Agency

Rules-2
  • No public broadcasting, speeches, music etc
  • Licensees may use codes and abbreviations to
    assist communication, but they must not obscure
    the meaning
  • Foundation licensees must personally use their
    station. Other amateurs must operate it under
    their own callsign (eg /P)
  • Any change of address must be notified in advance
    in writing
  • Operation on Maritime vessels and aircraft is not
    permitted
  • canal boats are ok!
  • Satellite Operation is not permitted

Callsign Use
  • Must Give your Callsign-
  • When calling CQ
  • Every 15mins
  • Mobile Operation callsign /M
  • Temporary Location callsign /P
  • When /P must give the location of the Station
    every 30mins to an accuracy of at least 5km
  • On Repeaters - Must Give Callsign on Every Over

Logbooks
  • All licensees must keep a permanent record of all
    transmissions at main address and when /P - The
    LOG
  • Logbooks must not be loose-leaf, nor have gaps.
  • Electronic Logging must have magtape, disc etc
    backed up
  • Need to record Date, Time in UTC (ie GMT),
    Frequency Band, Mode and Power, Callsigns of
    stations worked, and own location if /P.
  • Logs must be kept and made available for
    inspection by a person authorised by Ofcom.

Bandplans
  • Bands, Modes Powers are laid down in the
    licence schedule
  • Note that many allocations are secondary use
    only.
  • Bandplans are agreed operating practice -
    contrast with BR68 Schedules which have full
    legal force
  • Note transmission bandwidth varies with mode and
    is now specified in latest bandplans - Dont over
    deviate !
  • Study bandplans carefully and understand them
  • Note use of calling channels and availability of
    repeaters on VHF/UHF FM sections of the bands
