2What do we mean by Sustainable Communities ?
- "sustainable communities need more than just
housing. They need a strong economy jobs good
schools and hospitals good public transport a
safe and healthy local environment, better
design, more sustainable construction, better use
of land and much more - (John Prescott, House of Commons, 5th February

3ODPM action at a strategic level
- Aims to
- increase housing supply tackling housing
shortage - 50 increase in new social housing investing in
new growth areas - tackle areas of low demand abandonment
- 950m for low demand areas, including pathfinders
in 9 worst areas

- improve condition of homes (social and private)
- 7bn for council homes, plus extra resources for
private properties - regenerate communities encourage social
inclusion - 4.5bn for deprived areas, tackling main causes

8Impact on health of rough sleeping
- poor physical health (higher rates of TB and
hepatitis) - poor condition of feet and teeth
- respiratory problems, skin diseases, injuries
following violence and infections - 30-50 have mental health problems
- 50 alcohol reliant / 70 misusing drugs
9Impact on children of inappropriate use of
temporary accommodation
- increased risk of a low birth weight greater
likelihood of illness - higher incidence of mental health problems /
increased behavioural problems - delayed development / difficulties in
communication - disengagement from health services checks, and
immunisation programmes

- improve health and mobility
- reduce hospital admissions
- reduce length of stay/delayed discharge
- improve access to primary care / reduce visits to
AE - increase use of treatment services (e.g detox)
- promote stability ? reduce psychological
distress.
