Mood/Atmosphere
  • The emotional feelings inspired by a work. The
term is borrowed from meteorology to describe the
dominant mood of a selection as it is created by
    diction, dialogue, setting, and description.
Often the opening scene in a play or novel
establishes an atmosphere appropriate to the
theme of the entire work. (http//web.cn.edu/kwhee

Irony
  • an implied discrepancy between what is said and
    what is meant (http//www.tnellen.com/cybereng/lit
    _terms/irony.html)
  • Verbal irony is a disparity of expression and
intention when a speaker says one thing but
means another, or when a literal meaning is
contrary to its intended effect. An example of
    this is sarcasm.
  • Dramatic irony is a disparity of expression and
awareness when words and actions possess a
significance that the listener or audience
understands, but the speaker or character does
    not.
  • Situational irony is the disparity of intention
and result when the result of an action is
contrary to the desired or expected effect.
Likewise, cosmic irony is disparity between human
desires and the harsh realities of the outside
world (or the whims of the gods). By some
definitions, situational irony and cosmic irony
    are not irony at all.
  • Ex. of dramatic irony Romeo and Juliet by
William Shakespeare. When Romeo finds Juliet in a
drugged sleep, he assumes her to be dead and
kills himself. Upon awakening to find her dead
lover beside her, Juliet then kills herself

Balanced Sentence
  • when sentence elements are parallel, they are
grammatically equal and a balanced sentence not
only reflects coordinated arrangement but also
emphasizes the contrast or the similarity between
items and ultimately contributes to overall unity
and coherence within a written work.a sentence
that employs parallel structure of approximately
    the same length and importance.

  • From Lincoln's Gettysburg Address on November 19,
1863, two powerful examples "But in a larger
    sense, we cannot dedicate--we cannot
    consecrate--we cannot hallow--this ground." and
"....--that government of the people, by the
people, for the people, shall not perish from the
    earth.
