Abstract The EF-hand family of eukaryotic
calcium-binding proteins is designed to respond
efficiently to changes in the intracellular
calcium levels. As such they play regulatory
functions in the cell being involved in cell
regulation, muscle contraction and ion channel
activation. Some EF-hand proteins have highly
specific functions, while others, like
calmodulin, are promiscuous and can interact with
some 300 distinct target proteins. In this
presentation I will describe how calmodulin can
be an efficient multitasking protein, how the
calcium-integrin binding protein can mediate
transmembrane signaling in platelets and how the
neuronal caldendrin protein can be regulated
through protein phosphorylation. Finally I will
highlight the enormous diversity of
calmodulin-like proteins and unique structures in
plants.
Pizza and pop will be provided
