Indigenous male health a snapshotMale life
expectancy (1996-2001) is 59.4 yrs.75 of
Indigenous males die before 65 years of age,
compared to 26 of their non Indigenous
counterparts.We are more likely to die from
almost any cause and at any age than non-
Indigenous males. Cardiovascular disease the
biggest killer of Indigenous males.

Main policy responses
  • National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and
    Torres Strait Islander Health makes men's health
    a priority but there is little evidence of this
    in practice.
  • National Framework for improving the Health and
    Wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
    Islander Males remains unimplemented.
  • Indigenous men treated as problems lack of
    preventative emphasis, or genuinely holistic
    approach that recognises that without addressing
    male health issues in any given context, any
    solution is likely to be a bandaid.
