About the Aboriginal Disability Network NSW
  • The Aboriginal Disability Network NSW has been
    created to enable Aboriginal people with
    disability living in NSW to
  • tell their stories.
  • give each other support
  • to create a voice for positive change
  • In 2004 the ADN visited 33 Aboriginal communities
    around NSW to consult with Aboriginal people with
    disability and community members about their
    needs and to provide individual advocacy support.

disability living in NSW Systemic issues
  • The prevalence of disability in Aboriginal
    communities. And the prevalence of particular
    types of disability.
  • Undiagnosed disability
  • hearing impairment
  • mental illness
  • The problem with identifying as having a
    disability
  • Multiple layers of discrimination. Double and
    triple disadvantage.

  • The denial of the most fundamental of human
    rights i.e, access to shelter, access to
    education, employment
  • Aboriginal people with disability have different
    experiences depending on where they live and the
    availability of services.
  • The failure of government and non-government
    service providers to meet the needs of Aboriginal
    people with disability.

  • Racial discrimination and its implications for
    Aboriginal people with disability.
  • Competing priorities in the Aboriginal rights
    movement.
  • Aboriginal people with disability live in extreme
    poverty.

What needs to be done?
  • Non-indigenous service providers (including
    government)
  • Recognise and acknowledge failure.
  • Develop culturally appropriate outreach
    strategies to engage directly with community.
  • Demonstrate meaningful outcomes i.e consultation
    is not enough
  • Recognise that Aboriginal people with disability
    want to be supported to stay within their own
    communities.

  • Non-indigenous service providers (including
    government)
  • Flexible service delivery.
  • Ask what want.
  • Develop service options that give Aboriginal
    people with disability and their associates
    choice.
  • Fundamentally build relationships taking a long
    term view.

  • Recognise that Aboriginal owned and operated
    services need greater capacity.
  • Rights based approach.
  • The priority must always be to support a
    self-determined future for Aboriginal people with
    disability.
