A short history of the Heart of Reeds
(Resource 1)
  • John Parry is a founder of the Lewes Railway Land
    Wildlife Trust. The aim was to protect the
    railway land which was declared a Local Nature
    Reserve in 1995. It used to be a railway
    junction and has a signal box taken from Uckfield
    in 1990. It was refurbished and finished in
    1997. The signal box is like a mini classroom
    and you can look out of the window to see the
    birds.
  • The Junior Management Board (JMB) was started in
    1996 with 10 members between 7 and 15 years old,
    from local schools. The JMB was set up to
    involve children in running the railway land
    site.
  • The creation of the reed bed in 2005 was designed
    by a Lewes artist, Chris Drury. Called Heart of
    Reeds , this project was inspired by the cardiac
    twist found in the human heart. Find out more

    on your trip. Look at the cartoons carefully and
    discuss what you think is happening in each of
    the pictures. This will help you to think about
    the wildlife and pond dip safely.
