What is it?

• An adaptation is any change an organism makes to
  adjust to its surroundings.

Causes

• An adaptation is usually a response to a change
  in surroundings such as
• Temperature change
• Amount of sunlight
• Pollution
• Population changes
• Changes in overall environment

What Causes the Change?

• Sometimes a natural climate change, population
  change or natural disaster can cause an
  environment to change.
• More often, humans impact environments by
  destroying habitat, increasing pollution, and
  even affecting the climate.

Animal Adaptations

• Animals who are better able to adapt to changes
  in their environment are more likely to survive
  and reproduce.
• If an animal cant adapt to changes, it will have
  to move to a new area, or may even die.

Advantages

• Many adaptations give animals an advantage in
  their environment. Examples
• Hollow bones make it easier for birds to fly
• Thick, hollow hair gives better insulation to
  arctic animals, as does white coloring.
• Camouflage helps animals avoid being seen and
  eaten.
