Objectives

• Students will identify all the planets in the
  solar system.
• Students will recognize that the planets revolve
  around the sun.

What is our solar system?

• Our solar system is the sun and the planets that
  orbit around it.
• Orbit means to revolve or go around.
• The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
  Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

Mercury

• It is the first planet from the sun.
• The Romans named it after the swift messenger god.

Venus

• It is the second planet from the sun.
• The Romans named it after the goddess of love and
  beauty.

Earth

• It is the third planet from the sun.
• We live on Earth.
• It has one satellite, called the moon.

Mars

• It is the fourth planet from the sun.
• The Romans named it after the god of war.
• It has 2 moons.

Jupiter

• It is the fifth planet from the sun.
• It was named after the roman king of gods.
• It is the largest of all the planets of the solar
  system.
• It has a lot of moons.

Saturn

• It is the sixth planet from the sun.
• It was named after the roman god of agriculture.
• It has rings that are made up of ice particles.
• It is the second largest planet.
• It also has a lot of moons.

Uranus

• It is the seventh planet from the sun.
• It was named after the Greek sky god.
• It has 22 moons.

Neptune

• It is the eighth and last planet in the solar
  system.
• It was named after the roman sea god.
• It has 13 moons.

What about Pluto?

• In 2006 Pluto was officially named a dwarf
  planet, rather than a planet.
