2CURRENT KNOWLEDGE
- FWD96/62/EC the number of monitoring stations
must be reduced as more as possible ? their
spatial representativeness is a key-point for
classifying AQ assessment. - The issue of representativeness, however, has
been overlooked - ?lack of a quantitative method to describe the
concept of representativeness - ?inconsistent comparison for monitoring data
among different sites.

4Preliminary assessment
- Its a very important step for the definition of
network design. The final locations are selected
according to - type and intensity of emitting sources
- distribution of polluting sources in the urban
area - expected maximum concentration points in
relationship to the presence of human targets
(population exposure) - prevailing meteorological conditions
- model applications
- geographical context
- other proper studies.

16Conclusions (1)
- The preliminary assessment can be used to
design the network - Select the representativeness of zones,
- Macrodesign the network,
- Microdesign the monitoring stations.
17Conclusions (2)
- The measurement of spatial frequency distribution
of pollutants can be used to microdesign the
network - Equipment of each monitoring station
- Spatial representativeness of each measurement
- A simple passive network (e.g.12 locations) may
fully complement fixed stations for better
spatial representativity
