Program
- Lower division 1st 2 years, pre-professional
- Upper division Last 2 years, nursing clinical
courses - N340 Community Health Nursing
- N 350 and N440 Adult, Pediatrics,
Psychiatric-Mental Health, Maternal Newborn - N450 Synthesis course
7The Challenge
- Feedback/evaluation from N340 students regarding
the Community Course - I was expecting to finally do nursing stuffthis
is not Nursing - I did not go to school to be a teacher
- I want to be in the hospital and give shots
8The Opportunity
- Develop a teaching initiative that will
facilitate an understanding of the role of he
Community Health Nurse
9Describing and Defining Mentoring
- A learning relationship between and older and
younger person that is based on modeling behavior
and dialogue between them. A way of
individualizing a students education by allowing
or encouraging the student to connect with a
college member who is experienced..
C.Johnson(1989).
- Vance and Olsen(1998)found that mentoring
relationships are common throughout nursing
careers - Nurses who are mentored mentor others
Scott(2005)
10Jesus as Mentor Our Best Role Model!
11The Process
- Faculty retreat brainstorming
- Discussion with faculty
- Personal/professional background
12The Objectives
- The 340 and 450 student will identify the role of
the professional nurse in a variety of community
settings
13450 Senior Student objectiveDemonstrate
leadership behavior in the role of a student
mentor by
14 - advising the N340 student on behaviors and study
habits helpful in successfully matriculating
through the nursing program - b. being available to the N340 student for
questions and advice in course content matter,
and - c. modeling academic accomplishments through the
Synthesis Project Presentation and
working collaboratively with the 340 students in
assessing a community agency visit
15The 340 student will1. Identify two
prevention based nursing interventions for a
specific client population.(Interventions must
be identified as primary, secondary or tertiary
prevention)One of the interventions needs to
include the community resource that you visited)
162. Identify specific available community
resources for above interventions.3. Work
collaboratively with the 450 mentor in conducting
an assessment of a community resource. ( This
info will be put onto a form located in the 340
syllabus binder sheet)
17The N450 Assignment
- A 20 minute PowerPoint presentation of the
synthesis project - Present to Junior (N340) and Senior(450) peers
and 2 faculty members - Synthesis presentation included
Pathophysioilogy, treatments, meds, and a nursing
care plan based on current research
18The 340 Assignment
- 10 minute PowerPoint presentation that
- 1. identifies the two prevention based nursing
interventions for a specific illness/disease - 2. Summarizes the community resource visited
with the 450 mentor
19Senior 450 student presenting
20Junior 340 Student presenting
21Group Discussion
- Discussion of case studies and community
resources. Seniors asked Share how your image
of nursing has changed? Any pointers/tips for
success?
22The Pilot
- 16 total students (N340 N450)
- Feedback all thought it was beneficial
- Positive Feedback
- Negative Feedback
23The Feedback
- All Seniors stated it was beneficial
- I wish we were paired together earlier(Jr 2nd
degree students with Sr 2nd degree student) - I was made aware of new community and cultural
resources in the area
- All Juniors stated it was beneficial
- Gives me a better picture of where I will be
next year - I liked hearing about future clinical
experiences
24The Implementation
- Meeting with faculty from both courses to explain
the assignment - Logistics of matching up the 130 total N340 and
N450 students and finding times/rooms for all to
present over two days - Communicating the assignment to both class groups
25The Senior Dialogue
- I never realized how huge the role of teaching
is in nursing - You can teach a monkey to put in a catheter..but
they cannot critically think - Everything you are learning now and you will
learn in the program, you are going to use!
26More from the Seniors
- Everything begins to make sense
- It is the relationships with the patients that
matter most - Dont let anyone discourage you about going into
nursing, it is a great choice
27Dialogue from the Juniors
- More listening than talking
- Glad to know more of what is ahead
- Questions about working while in Nursing School
- Questions about Nurse Externships
28The Future
- Continue to implement the N340/N450 peer
mentoring project - Pair students together earlier in the Semester
- Plan for joint hospital visit?
- Plan for joint community health home visit
29The Benefits
- Cost effective!
- Prepares them for future professional mentoring
relationships - Encouraging to faculty
- Students tend to listen to each other more openly
intently than they would listen to faculty - Gives Junior students a vision of where they are
heading - Gives Senior students a time to shine and mentor
30The Recommendations
- Continue the 340/450 joint synthesis
presentations - Develop joint home visits (include a Senior and
Junior student) - Develop joint community visits
31Think of a person who has been a professional/
spiritual /personal mentor for you?
32What did that mentor do for you that you found to
be helpful?
33Does anyone have any experience with a
mentoring program designed for college/adult and
professional students?
34- What current challenges are you facing in your
curriculum? - How could a student peer mentoring program help ?
35The end Thankyou!
