50 years ago!I trained as a Clinical Nurse
Teacher 30 years ago!I designed researched
the Waterlow risk assessment tool shortly before
I had to retire on medical grounds about 20 years
ago-due to the increasing severity of my R.A.As
a freelance speaker, I gained knowledge from
experienced nurses and students regarding the
effects of University nurse training while
travelling throughout the UK, phone etc. and my
own experience as a patient.I am now delighted
that I am here as a Musgrove Partner!!

National Standard - Block System Personal
Interview
- Nurse Tutors Taught Theory
- Clinical Nurse Teachers Simulated Ward (away
from the stresses of ward life) teaching
practical skills - Linking Theory to Practice
- Fundamentals of care - total patient care/
holistic - Communication
- Practical skills documentation
- Block System Year 1- 8 wks-Introduction/school-
ward experience - Year 2- 2 weeks-school- theory practical skills
- Year 3- 3
- Advantages
- Theory skills constantly backed up by practice.
- Gaining confidence to practice holistic care and
prioritise needs.
3Hospital Schools of Nursing closed- Students were
given bursaries and travel to UniversityClinical
Nurse Teacher training ceased became Tutors
- University Training- tutorials/ lectures
- No teaching clinical skills away from busy
wards/sick stressed patients. - Instead- observing in a care home/ward
- Writing an assignment with many references on a
chosen subject (I had many requests-for guidance) - Ward staff morale began to drop patients began
to notice and the press started to write
headlines.

the Clinical Nurse Teacher and National Standards
of Training
7At Last Nursing Training is beginning to change
- Hooray! things are beginning to turn full
circle - A return to practical learning on the wards
- Faculties of Nursing being developed in acute
trusts - Clinical Nurse Teachers back on the wards
- Learn Practise Be Tested
