4Thailands Solid Waste Problem
- In 1984, Bangkok was ranked one of the top five
dirtiest cities in the world.
5Thailands Solid Waste Problem
- Thailand currently produces nearly 22 million
tons of waste from residences, industries,
businesses and hospitals - Likely that by 2010, municipal waste generation
will grow by 25 percent and industrial hazardous
waste by 35 percent. - Nationally, the average amount of solid waste
produced per person in 2002 was 0.65 kg per day,
a number that has grown an estimated 17 percent
between 1994 and 2001 - Around 30 of Thailands solid waste is
packaging waste - Bangkok recycles only 15 percent of its solid
waste - Roughly 42 percent of Thailands municipal solid
waste is comprised of glass, plastic, paper and
metal, and around 50 percent is biodegradable
organic waste. - Approximately 25,000 informal recyclers
