    started years ago?
  • How much time can you give to attending class or
    to studying outside of class?
  • How do you plan to balance work, family, kids,
    and assignments?
  • How much can you reasonably afford to spend on
tuition, fees, books, supplies, child care, etc?

3

programs?

    career, or community

Financing Your Education
  • Payment Options
  • Defining Financial Aid
  • How to Apply for Financial Aid

11
Payment Options
  • NLU offers many payment options for making
    education affordable for you
  • Full Payment ONLY applicable if pre-paying for
the entire four-term program major and includes a
4 discount. Discount does not apply to
situations where students receive the NLU grant.
  • Term by Term one payment per term
  • Deferred Payment one payment per month, over
    the course of 3 months
  • Tuition Reimbursement including Top-up/VA
  • Direct Billing to Employer (including military
    tuition assistance)
  • Tuition Assistance (Military) and Veterans
    Benefits
  • Financial Aid

12
Defining Military Tuition Assistance
  • For non-Army personnel
  • Go to your education office with your degree plan
and/or class schedule before the beginning of
each term or class and fill out tuition
assistance forms. (If you try to fill out TA
after class has started, your education office
    will not grant tuition assistance.)
  • Keep a copy of the TA for yourself. Fax a copy
to Diane Meek at 703-749-3024. If you are also
using Top Up, mail a copy of your TA and your
    Top-up application to
  • Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Regional Processing Office
  • PO Box 4616
  • Buffalo, NY 14240-4614
  • If you do not receive your VA/Top Up money by the
end of your term, you will still be expected to
pay that portion out of pocket. VA money is
considered a reimbursement, since the money goes
directly to the student and not the university.
If, however, your education office, or employer,
hasnt paid your TA or 1556 by the end of your
term, as long as we have a copy of the form, you
will not be held accountable for that payment.
  • For Army personnel
  • Go to the website www.goarmyed.com

13
Defining Veterans Benefits
  • If you run out of tuition assistance for the
fiscal year, or you are no longer active duty,
please contact Diane Meek at 703.394-6920. She
will assist you with the process of applying for
    VA benefits.
  • If you are using Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill
benefit (VA) by itself, please note that
generally speaking, Chapter 30 does not cover
100 of the undergraduate tuition. Payment is
made on a sliding scale based on your enrollment
status. The enrollment status, for the BSM and
BSMIS courses, is evaluated by the VA per course.
You may find one month your course is considered
full time, and you may find that next month, the
next course is considered part-time. Expect
Chapter 30 to pay about 75 of the entire balance
and plan to pay the remaining 25 out of pocket.
This can be done through financial aid, or
perhaps your employer has some tuition benefits.

14
Defining Financial Aid
  • The term financial aid refers to resources
(other than the familys personal funds) that are
used to pay the cost of attendance
  • There are three main types of financial aid
  • Scholarships gift funds that do not have to be
repaid some awarded based on either academic
    performance or need
  • Grants gift funds, based on need, that do not
    have to be repaid
  • Loans low interest loans which must be repaid,
with interest, after the student is no longer
enrolled or ceases to be enrolled at least
    half-time

15
Loan Responsibilities
  • Before NLU will disburse loan funds, federal
regulations require that students complete an
    entrance counseling session.
  • (Visit http//www.mapping-your-future.org/service
    s)
  • To maintain eligibility to receive loans,
    students must
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Complete their degree within certain time limits
  • Pay any past due tuition and fees before
    beginning a new term

16
