2
Introduction
While OSUs greatest capacity for expansion in
this new century lies West of the Olentangy
River, there remains, in the highly desirable
North Academic Core, considerable opportunity for
growth.
3
The North Academic Core
  • 85 acres
  • 4.3 million GSF of buildings
  • Home to
  • - Federation of Arts and Sciences
  • - College of Engineering
  • - College of Education
  • Loosely organized by discipline
  • Urban character
  • Walkable collegiate scale
  • In the heart of the Central Campus

4
Project Approach and Scope
Big Picture Long View
  • Evaluate existing conditions
  • Analyze district as a whole
  • Review / Coordinate past studies (campus-wide)
  • Propose comprehensive growth strategies
  • Optimize potential of a desirable district
    without compromising its character

5
Opportunities for Optimizing District
  • Replace inefficient buildings
  • Optimize underdeveloped sites
  • Over 1 million additional GSF of building is
    possible
  • Reinforce open spaces with consistent building
    edges
  • Activate open spaces with ground floor program
  • Facilitate / Promote interaction
  • Strengthen connections to adjacent districts
  • Upgrade infrastructure to support increased
    capacity
  • Provide flexible framework for growth
  • Provide attractive building sites for future
    donors

Supporting the Campus Master Plan
The Urban Design Concept and supporting
recommendations for the North Academic Core are
founded on the principles and goals of the 1995
Master Plan.
16
Master Plan Goals
  • Open SpacePlan first for open space and then
plan for buildings and other facilities to
    reinforce those spaces
  • Land ResourcesPlan future development at
densities that conserve land, avoid excessive
sprawl and reinforce the collegial, walking
    environment
  • Civic StructurePreserve and extend the campus
grid to join the campus neighborhoods and
districts together in a more integrated way
  • Campus and CommunityForm a continuous urban
setting yet campus edges will be distinguished
by gateways, landscape and changes in land use
  • Campus RoadsReinforce a system of connecting
    (academic) boulevards between districts and
internal streets that follow the campus and
    city grid
  • ParkingReplace displaced parking in
    strategically located, well-designed
    structures while pursuing strategies for
    reducing per capita parking demand

17
Master Plan Open Space Guidelines
  • Urban street grid
  • Interconnected open spaces
  • Unified network of outdoor paths
  • Buildings to reinforce civic structure
  • Lane Avenue as campus gateway
  • Woodruff as academic boulevard
  • High Street as urban front door

BUILDINGS URBAN COURTYARD PEDESTRIAN
PROMENADE SERVICE COURT
18
Master Plan Building Guidelines
  • New buildings in the North Campus should be four
    floors high at minimum
  • Where new buildings exceed the height of
    neighboring buildings, setbacks should be
    employed
  • Building facades should be located along
indicated build-to lines to create a consistent
    street or quadrangle wall
  • Facades located on service areas or secondary
spaces may vary to suit the requirements of the
    building
  • Facades and adjacent public spaces to be
harmoniously linked and reinforce each other
  • Facades facing major public spaces should have
primary entrances and abundant windows to
    enliven spaces
  • Employ compatible materials and scale
  • Mechanical equipment and service areas should be
concealed and inaudible from adjacent public
    spaces

    the North Green
  • Neil Avenue and College Road upgraded as major
    North-South promenades
  • New buildings reinforce district edges on High
    Street and Woodruff Avenue
  • Ground floor program and amenities activate open
    space
