MBTC historic mission with the D.O.T.
  • Funded as a University Transportation Center
    (UTC)
  • Essentially a grants program within
self-stated guidelines, awards projects from open
    calls
  • Emphasis on education and technology-transfer
  • Generally requires dollar-for-dollar match of
    federal funds

5
MBTC Research Policies procedures
  • Requirements generally stem from the reporting
requirements imposed upon MBTC by sponsoring
    agencies
  • Proper information deadlines critical
  • Typically-required information
  • P.I. Bio Sketch std. form available
  • Problem statement std. form available

MBTC Vision for the NtsCOE
  • Vision Statementa nationally recognized
research and education center dedicated to
    solving pressing scientific and technological
issues related to transportation security and
    producing transportation professionals capable of
leading public and private sector efforts aimed
at providing U.S. citizens a safe and secure
    comprehensive transportation system.
  • Keys
  • Research
  • Education

9
MBTC Vision for the NtsCOE
  • Goals
  • Develop comprehensive, cost-effective, and
    imminently implementable solutions to critical
    security issues facing transportation
  • Prepare transportation professionals for
leadership rolesin support of securing the
    nations transportation systems

10
MBTC Vision for the NtsCOE
  • Objectives
  • Identify and definecritical technology and
    system needsandto provide engineering solutions
    to those needs
  • Develop and institutionalize a system-of-systems
    engineering approach to the development,
    implementation, and management of technological
    solutions
  • Recruit, educate, and train graduate students and
other transportation professionals to use the
    system-of-systems perspective andoperate in
    aresearch and engineering environment

11
System of systems
  • Day-to-day activities of the people, industry and
military of the United States are fundamentally
supported by a set of critical, interdependent
    and complex transportation infrastructure systems
  • Critical transportation infrastructure systems
are comprised of many components that act and
    interact
  • Transportation systems and the interactions of
these systems must be technologically capable,
    reliable, resilient and sustainable

12
