STRUCTURED SYSTEMS ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY

• A new method for solving system problems and
  describing their solutions.
• Developed by Larry Constantine, Edward Yourdon,
  Chris Gane, Trish Sarson, and others.
• This methodology replaced lengthy textual
  descriptions with diagrams that substituted words
  for figures and flowlines for written narratives.

SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE (SDLC)

• A five-phase approach
• forms the foundation and structure for most
  systems work.
• Work Product - is a finite,measurable amount of
  work that results from the expenditure of effort
  during a phase of the SDLC.

THE FIVE PHASES OF SDLC

• Planning Phase - this is where analysts
  recognize, diagnose, and define the problem. This
  phase lays the groundwork for further study and
  the stages that will follow.
• Analysis Phase - at this stage the analyst
  reviews data, information, and documentation that
  describe the existing system.

• Design Phase - the analyst identifies and
  considers alternatives during this phase. A major
  aspect of system design is the structure,
  organization, and format of the information that
  will be contained in its database.
• Development Phase - in this phase the new system
  is actually built.
• Implementation Phase - the last step of the cycle
  that deals with the changeover to a new or
  improved system.
