EC Directive on WEEE

• The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
  Directive (WEEE Directive)
• Minimise the impact of electrical and electronic
  goods on the environment.
• By increasing re-use and recycling and reducing
  the amount of WEEE going to landfill.
• Producers and distributors responsibility for
  waste disposal.

Implementation of WEEE

• The UK Regulations implementing the WEEE
  Directive were laid before Parliament on 12
  December 2006 and entered into force on 2 January
  2007.

WEEE directives (1)

• Comtek has always operated an environmental
  policy.
• Directive 2202/95/EC covers hazardous substances
  in electrical and electronic equipment.
• Directive 2002/96/EC covers landfill and
  incineration of above.

  serial number.
• Disposal partners produce certificates by weight.
• Hazardous chemicals such as arsenic, mercury,
  cadmium and lead are quantified and certified.

Unpleasant Facts

• Electronic products contain deadly toxins such as
  mercury, barium, lead, chromium, cadmium,
  polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dioxins.
• E-waste dumped in landfills risks the leaching of
  heavy metals into the ground water and soil.
  Burning E-waste produces lethal fumes that
  contaminate the air.
• Shipping of deadly products overseas.

IT manufacturers

• Offer schemes for the return of scrap equipment
  but you end up paying for this
• Where the manufacturer does not have a scheme the
  end- user is responsible for the safe disposal of
  products.
• Manufacturers are primarily involved in trying to
  sell new equipment
• They are not interested in schemes which prolong
  the life of their products
• End of Life products
• Loss of discounts for return of repairs
