3About NSO of Mongolia
- The system of official statistics is largely
centralized and composed of - The National Statistical Office as the main
actor - Local statistical divisions, under the direct
management of the NSO - Other governmental agencies authorized to collect
statistics, such as Bank of Mongolia, Ministry of
Finance etc. - The NSO of Mongolia was established in 1924.

- The Law on Statistics is the legal basis to carry
out statistical activities. - The mission of the National Statistical Office,
Mongolias official statistical agency, is to
provide national and international users with a
high quality, cost-effective and objective
statistical service.

- Main functions of the NSO
- Collect, compile, publish and disseminate the
fundamental statistics - Conduct censuses and surveys
- Buildup and maintain the statistical
infrastructure registers, classifications,
nomenclatures, databases - Develop and improve the statistical methodology.
6About NSO of Mongolia
- According to the Law, the statistical activities
of NSO and other producers of official statistics
must be carried out in compliance with the
fundamental principles of official statistics. - In 1997, the Government of Mongolia initiated the
public sector management reform program and
adopted strategic management approach.
7About NSO of Mongolia
- The NSO was one of the implementing agency of the
reform initiatives on the pilot basis. - The experience gained from the implementation was
useful in extending the reform program to other
governmental agencies.
8Why does it need a strategic planning?
- Since 1990 Mongolia has been moving from
centralized planning system to a market economy
and democratic society. - According to this the objectives of official
statistics, its environment, and the field of its
activities are changing rapidly. - New directions, new statistical culture and new
statistics are needed.

- A systemic planning and programming of
statistical activities are essential in - reforming and developing official statistics
efficiently and effectively - keeping it sustainable and relevant to the needs
of users.
