1Water Life
in the past and today
2Water
- Colorless, inodorous, without taste and calories
it is essential for life. Without water every man
and animal would die. - It is as important as food and air.
3Water
- Water takes many different shapes on Earth
water vapor and clouds in the sky, waves and
icebergs in the sea, glaciers in the mountains,
aquifers in the ground, to name but a few.
Through evaporation, precipitation, and runoff,
water continuously turns from one form to
another, in what is called the water cycle.

15Water one of the Elements
A Greek philosopher Empedocles held that water
is one of the four classical elements along with
fire, earth and air. Water was considered cold
and moist.
16We can hold water by building bridges
17 building ships
18or building dams.
19Using water
Ancient civilizations came into being where the
natural conditions guaranteed abundance of water,
and in the place where they could build pockets,
dams, irrigation chanells or aqueducts.
20An aqueduct is an artificial (man-made) channel
that is made to transport water from one location
to another.
Roman aqueducts were built all over the Roman
Empire, from Germany to Africa, and especially in
the city of Rome itself, where they totalled over
416 km.
21After yearly flooding caused by the Nile, on the
river bank there remained a layer of fertile
black soil.
22Life was dependent on flooding of the Nile.
Ancient Egyptians prevented their land from
becoming barren by building dams and then
irrigating it.

24The origin of life
All known forms of life depend on water.
Water is a vital part of many metabolic processes
within the body, and significant quantities of
water are used during the digestion of food.
25Deficit of water
Absence of sweet water occurs in the wilderness
places and so the poorest countries are for
example Mali, Nigeria, Chad, or Sudan.
26 The countries innumerated below have been
arranged according to the amount of water per
cubic metre a year starting with the countries
suffering from the biggest deficit are
Malta, Catarrh, Singapur, Israel, Kenia,
Algieria, Somalia etc.
27When rains fail like in Somalia, its hard to
hope for a better day
28In the picture we can see Ramdzan Mondol a man
from West Bengal in India, even when he has free
water he is dying slowly because of arsenicism
which makes water from low wall becames to be
toxic.
29Floods
- Floods have been noticed from the earliest
years, even before Christ. The Bible describes
The Great Flood. Nowadays floods occur because of
persistent or heavy rains. They can also be
caused by quick melting of the snow.
