2
Outline
  • Experiments
  • Basic Sediments and Water
  • Density of liquids
  • Viscosity
  • Dew point measurement
  • Heat of Combustion
  • Calculations
  • Design of Separators

3
The Importance of Petroleum
  • Oil is used for everyday activities such as
  • Fuel for cars
  • Cooking
  • Generating electricity

4
The Goal
  • Our goal is to design a three phase separator.
  • We will have to design either a vertical or
    horizontal separator for our project
  • We did five experiments that helped us to design
    three phase separator

5
Basic Sediment Water
  • Determine the percentage of soil and water in an
    oil mixture sample.
  • Use the data to aid in determination of vessel
    type and dimensions.

6
Viscosity Determination
Viscosity is the thickness or resistance to flow
of a fluid.
7
Density of Water and Crude Oil
  • The methods that we used are
  • 1.- Pycnometer
  • 2.- Hydrometer
  • API (American Petroleum Institute)

8
Dew point measurement
  • There is always some water vapor in the natural
    gas.
  • Vapor can cause problems when condenses into
    water
  • Decrease flow area in the pipe
  • Corrosion of the pipe
  • Burning will be less efficient
  • We need to know at what temperature and how much
    water will condense.

9
When we decreased the temperature of water
saturated air, we observed the water droplets
forming at dew point temperature.
  • Dry air goes into the container
  • It mixes with water and wet air goes out of the
    container
  • Container outlet is connected to a chamber
  • We cool the chamber
  • Water vapor condenses as droplets in the chamber

Heat Of Combustion
The amount of grams and the volume does not have
an affect on the experiment, the only thing that
matters is the amount of energy released during
combustion
11
Design of Separators
Horizontal separator
Vertical separator

Conclusion
  • Basic sediments and Water
  • how much water and sand exist in the crude oil
  • Density
  • higher density heavier lower density lower
    weight
  • Viscosity
  • the less viscous is the crude oil the faster its
    extraction
  • Dew Point Measurement and Water Vapor
  • separate the water vapor from the natural gas
  • Heat of Combustion
  • to determine how much energy a substance
    releases
  • Design of Separator
  • slenderness ratio its important to determine
    the size of our separator
