Education
2So, what is the NRC?
A new national strategic support organisation
for the supplementary education sector across
England funded by the DCSF and the Paul Hamlyn
Foundation and aiming to be a national
champion for excellence, innovation and
partnership in supplementary education.
3Our aims
4House of Commons debate 27th February 08
- The Government could do more to encourage
mainstream schools to take advantage of the
benefits that supplementary schools bring,
especially by supporting supplementary education
through the successful extended schools
programme
5House of Commons debate
- Supplementary schools and mainstream schools
link together to contribute to the integration
and attainment of children. Where that is taking
place in a genuine partnership, the impact is
demonstrable and impressive.
6What weve done so far
- Audited existing partnerships
- Developed new partnerships
- Published case studies to showcase best practice
and - Worked closely with extended services teams
7What we want to do next
- Support existing partnerships and facilitate the
development of new beneficial partnerships - Campaign for extended schools to charge at cost
or offer premises for free
8PYCA and Coleman Primary (Leicester)
- Coleman school has trained PYCAs staff in data
analysis and appraisal techniques, they are also
referring pupils to PYCA. All activities are
running from PYCA premises. PYCA has setup a
forum which includes headteachers from
neighbouring schools, the NRC, the Local
Authority and parents.
9Liaison with parents
- Turkish Youth Association and Spring Park School
(Croydon) - The partnership is mainly around liaising with
and supporting parents of pupils at school e.g.
in the bridging the communication gap and giving
advice on school admissions. There are some joint
activities e.g. language support at parents
evening, community language teaching,
interpreting, liaison with parents, celebrations
and assemblies. - The Russian Saturday School and Westwood School
(Croydon) - The mainstream school refers pupils to
supplementary school. The supplementary school
has teachers who are certified examiners for
Edexcel and the mainstream school utilises them
as a resource at examination time. The
supplementary school is invited by the mainstream
school to consult with parents and children where
English is not understood. - Both organisations work jointly on parents
evenings, community language teaching,
interpreting, liaison with parents, celebrations,
assemblies.
10Transition work
- The Polish School of Lincoln and St Peters and
St Pauls School (Lincoln) - The secondary school has been working with the
Polish school on transition work, making sure
that Yr6 pupils who attend the Polish school get
a chance to familiarise themselves with their
secondary school.
11Raising achievement
- Claudia Jones Organisation and Stoke Newington
College (Hackney, London) - This partnership is around supporting
underachieving black boys. The mainstream has
made classrooms available for the supplementary
school on weekends and after school hours. The
mainstream school refers pupils to the
supplementary school and also extends advice and
support to the supplementary school staff and
teachers.
