7 Effective Ways to Handle a Cranky Toddler
2
Handling a cranky child can be a challenge,
especially for new parents. However, it is not
uncommon.
3
Toddlers can throw tantrums for a number of
reasons, such as not being able to express their
emotions or feeling exhausted.
4
If you do not build a solid foundation for
self-regulation from a young age, they will
continue to use whining as a weapon to achieve
whatever they want.
5
The Best Ways to Calm Your Cranky Kid
1. Set a Schedule
2. Understand What Triggered Them
3. Use Positive Reinforcement for Good Behaviour
4. Create a Feelings Chart
5. Establish Eye Contact
6. Allow Your Child to Spend Some Time Alone
7. Stay Calm
6
Here are some effective tips to cool down a
cranky child.
7
1. Set a Schedule
Getting your kids to follow a schedule will
improve mood swings and help them stay calm. When
they eat, sleep and play in a timely manner every
day, they will be busy doing their daily tasks
and will eventually whine less.
8
2. Understand What Triggered Them
As a parent, it is important to understand what
triggers your child before reacting angrily. Try
to discover the problem and work together to
solve it.
9
3. Use Positive Reinforcement for Good Behaviour
Be clear about what you expect from your child.
Appreciate their good behaviour. You can also
give a small reward to make them understand the
value of it. They will be motivated to behave
properly and stop whining.

4. Create a Feelings Chart
When toddlers find it difficult to express their
emotions in words, they become angry and
frustrated. Help your kids by creating a feelings
chart with various emojis, including very happy,
sad, extremely sad, and angry. You can ask them
to point out which emoji describes their current
situation to make them express themselves better.
11
5. Establish Eye Contact
Establishing eye contact with your child will
ensure that they are listening to you. It also
means that they have your attention and know how
much they mean to you. Once they are able to
communicate with you in a non-verbal way, they
will slowly calm down.
12
6. Allow Your Child to Spend Some Time Alone
If you attend to your child every time they throw
a tantrum, they will keep doing it whenever they
want to get something. So, even though your
childs whining can be unbearable at times, it is
best to leave them alone so they learn that you
will not tolerate such behaviour.
13
7. Stay Calm
Children learn from their parents. So, make sure
you do not lose your temper while they are being
cranky. This can make the situation worse which
could have a lasting effect. Instead, stay calm
and composed as you make them understand in a
calm, low voice.
14
By following these tips, you will be able to calm
down your toddler without having any negative
impact on them.
