Coir Geotextiles Use to Prevent Soil Erosion
Critical Land Area
2
What is erosion?
  • Coir geotextiles - Erosion is a process that
causes the earth to wear down due to
environmental influences such as wind or water.
This process is best known for creating canyons
or rivers over centuries. In the mining industry,
we need to focus on the short-term impact of
erosion on topsoil. Any patch of land without
vegetation is at high risk that wind or rain will
remove the exposed topsoil and wash it away.

3
How does erosion affect the environment?
  • When considering erosion control, the first thing
to look at is how erosion affects the local
environment and what needs to be addressed.
Erosive runoff carries topsoil and possibly other
hazards away from the original location. This
runoff often ends up in creeks and streams and
can harm the existing ecosystem in local
waterways. When mining minerals, we must be aware
that "dirty earth" is removed from assigned
controlled areas. Soil contaminated with heavy
metals or other mining chemicals carried into
waterways can have harmful effects far beyond
what is expected. Once contaminated materials
enter the waterway, they can travel throughout
    the system.

4
  • Uncontaminated soil should also be handled with
care to ensure that it does not present a hazard
or affect the local environment. Topsoil and
other detritus washed into streams can cause
clogging to the point where it is even possible
to change the direction of a creek or stream.
Additionally, the loss of topsoil creates
problems when it comes time to revegetate
affected areas. The loss of nutrients and
organisms normally found in topsoil will hamper
the growth of any plant and create additional
    costs to encourage plant growth.
  • Although this does not affect the local
environment, the potential risks that erosion can
create must also be taken into account. Erosion
can wash away debris from roads or workplaces and
is a potential safety hazard that should be
    considered in erosion control planning.

5
Why is coir geotextile used for erosion control?
  • This article wants to give a small overview of a
simple post-mining treatment solution, or often
called ex-mine recovery. It is called a simple
solution because it uses local capacity in mining
areas or widely available materials in Indonesia.
The material used is coir geotextile or coir
mesh. The coconut geotextile is a coconut fiber
mesh that has become a prima donna in the
recovery process of mines, beaches or forests.
  • Its biodegradable and sustainable nature promotes
the growth of new plants in a field of coir
geotextile laid on former mining land. It has
been shown that the use of coir geotextiles can
green the area of old mines or bare forests.
Many former green mining consultancies have
started to switch to natural materials. The
nature of the Coir geotextile material, which is
made from coconut fiber, capable of retaining
water for a long time, contributes to the
preservation of the soil surface covered with
    this material.
  • This can affect the soil structure so that it can
be easily planted with seedlings or p seeds, as
well as coir geotextiles as a soil substitute
when planting the seeds or seedlings of the
plant. The advantages of this coir geotextile
material is durability, according to this source
it can last around 4 years or more so that the
material can thrive during the growth period of
new vegetation. The use of coir geotextile is
very suitable for sloping or rocky terrain given
    the elasticity of this material.
