Considering the growing importance of Electronic
Health Records Systems (EHRs) in various
organizations, here are the key factors to keep
in mind when choosing an EHRs and the different
types of EHRs available.
3
Types of EHRs
Client-Server
The server running the EHRs is physically located
in your office, which means you purchase the
server, the supporting hardware and the needed
network gear.
This also means that you will have to manually
conduct nightly backups and complete scheduled
updates and upgrades.
4
Hosted Client-Server Model
The server used in this case is either located in
the EHRs vendors office or in a third-party data
center, both of which are accessed using the
internet.
The hosting company will be responsible for the
nightly backups and upgrades of the system.
Since the server isnt located within your
practice, the speed of internet data transfer may
vary from system to system, based on the
functions being performed in the EHRs.
5
ASP (Application Service Provider)
ASP is designed in a manner that it can be
deployed over the internet.
There isnt any need to buy a server or even pay
for a hosting company.
While the backups and upgrades are conducted by
the vendor, the system always requires internet
service.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Electronic
Health Records System
The Size of Your Organization
ASP is designed in a manner that it can be
deployed over the internet.
There isnt any need to buy a server or even pay
for a hosting company.

the vendor, the system always requires internet
service.
7
ASP (Application Service Provider)
The confidentiality offered by an EHRs should
meet the highest standards, be it for a small or
a big organization.
It should be able to store data securely while
providing easy remote access to the concerned
parties whenever needed.
8
Cost of the System
Cost of EHR systems may vary, depending on the
features that they offer.
Some EHRs have a low initial price but require
hefty expenses to maintain and upgrade, while
some are expensive but cost-effective in the long
run.
Also, make sure not to end up paying extra for
features that arent going to be useful for your
facility.
9
Cost of the System
Ensure that the system is such that it can be
quickly implemented without having to install any
additional hardware.
It should be simple enough for training the staff
easily and efficiently.
10
Support
See to it that the EHRs vendor offers free
support in case the system encounters any problem.
Check whether 24/7 web training is available so
that it becomes easy to reach out to them when
talking to a live person isnt possible.
