Famous Seychelles palm trees Coral Strand Hotel
What do you imagine when you think of Seychelles?
Ocean, sand and of course, palm trees! In this
presentation well tell you about this famous
Seychelles sight.
2
The most famous Seychelles palm tree - of
course, Coco de Mer (Sea Walnut) - a symbol of
Seychelles. The fruit of the unique Coco de Mer
palm ripens for ten years. A female nut can weigh
up to 23 kilograms. Its fleshy jelly-like, with
fibers, pulp is considered a delicacy and a
medicine for many diseases.
3
Without a doubt, the fruits of the palm tree,
which grows only on the two islands of Seychelles
(mainly in the Valley de May in Praslin and
Curieuse) and nowhere else in the world, can be
called the most erotic plant in the world.
Female walnut in shape resembles an appetizing
lady's hips.
4
The erotic form of the nut Coco de Mer did not
leave anyone indifferent. In 1881, General Gordon
called them the forbidden fruit. Prior to the
discovery of Seychelles by the nut of Coco de
Mer, European kings were ready to give a fortune,
because it was believed that it was able to
restore and strengthen men's health and cure all
diseases. Resourceful sailors who discovered
the fruits of a nut floating in the Indian Ocean
also came up with a legend according to which
these nuts supposedly grew on amazing trees on
the seabed, hence the name Sea walnut.
5
Despite the fact that today the secret of sea
nuts has been revealed (in 1768 palm trees were
discovered on the island of Praslin), the price
of a whole nut of a female palm Coco de Mer can
reach up to 900. For tourists, for a lot of
money (sometimes the price tag goes up to several
hundred euros), only hollow walnuts are sold in
souvenir shops (in fact, peel without filling).
An empty nut, whose weight is approximately
200-300 grams, is much more convenient to carry
than an instance of 10-15 kilograms filled with
pulp.
6
Male type palm trees grow up to 30 meters high,
with fan leaves and meter-long earrings. Coco de
Mer's female palms grow up to 23 meters up to a
dozen nuts can grow on them at the same time.
Studies by scientists have shown that palm
trees live from about 200 to 400 years! The
leaves of these palm trees are used for roofing
homes, nuts - in medicine, cosmetology and for
the manufacture of household utensils and
souvenirs.
7
Coco de Mer palm trees used to grow on the
islands of Chauvet Suri, St. Pierre and Rond, but
today in nature they can only be found on the
Praslin and Curieuse. One female tree was also
planted by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 in the
Botanical Garden of Mahe.
8
The Seychelles Ministry of Environmental
Protection strictly controls the collection of
Coco de Mer nuts. Each is assigned an
individual number, even souvenir samples are sold
only with a special license (without it you wont
be released on the way back home). The proceeds
from the sale of entrance tickets in Valle de Mai
and souvenir nuts are used for environmental
projects.
