1
India and UK To Tie Up For The Cancer Research
Initiative
We know how successful UK has been to find
solutions for dreadful diseases, one like cancer.
It recently found a novel drug known as
Tisotumab Vedotin that can destroy tumours from
within the body, as it emits a toxic substance
within the cells that can eat up the cancer cells
from within. The drug has shown promising
results across six types of cancers like cervical
cancers, lung cancers, ovarian cancers, and
bladder cancers. With such innovation and
success, there is no doubt in the fact that UK
has a great potential to eliminate all forms of
deadly and complicated ailments.
Looking at this capability, India has decided to
partner with the country for greater benefits.
With the amazing success that UK has achieved to
find the cancer drug, the Indian Union Cabinet
chaired by Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, has
approved the Memorandum of Understanding between
India and UK on the Cancer Research Initiative.
This initiative is put in place to identify a
core set of research challenges that can address
the issues of affordability, prevention, and
care of cancer by bringing together leading
Indian and UK experts across clinical research,
demographic research, physical sciences, and new
technologies. The Memorandum of Understanding
was signed on November 14, 2018. The India-UK
Cancer Research Initiative is a collaborative
five year bilateral research initiative
undertaken by the Cancer Research UK (CRUK),
Ministry of Science and Technology of India, and
Department of Biotechnology (DBT), who will all
focus on affordable approaches to cancer.
2
The initiative will provide funding to develop
new research alliances, and to undertake
impactful research programs to enable significant
progress against cancer outcomes. Both CRUK and
DBT have decided to invest approximately Rs. 45
crores each in this five year collaboration,
making the total research funding for the
initiative an approx of Rs. 90 crores. Further
investment is also to be sought from other
potential funding partners in the future. With
such strong tie-ups between India and UK, the
clinical research industry is all set to boost
up soon. Where India is seeing only 1.4 of
clinical trials done today, the number is only
going to see an upsurge in the future, thanks to
this tie-up. India has 16 of the worlds
population, and carries 20 of the worlds
disease burden. With such huge numbers of
inhabitants and patients, dont you think its
time to boost up the number of clinical trials
being done in the country? While the government
takes its own steps to bring into the country
such change, you can also put in your efforts by
taking up clinical research as a career. Join a
reputed institute like Avigna Clinical Research
Institute and enroll for its online clinical
research courses to gain the best kind of
education and training from experts, and earn a
legitimate certification at the end of the
course. And, you may worry not, as you will be
given 100 placement and internship assistance
guaranteed after earning the certification. So,
you arent left without a job, and you can also
help in doing wonders for your own country!
