7 Easy Ways to Interact with Seniors Having a
Disability
Socializing with seniors who may have any form of
disability should be easier. Family caregivers
should interact with their loved ones who have
physical or mental disability in a normal and
respectful manner. It may be common for some
people to feel a bit awkward when taking to a
senior with disabilities. People may worry that
their behavior or gestures might hurt a senior
with disabilities. However, there are number of
ways which may help family caregivers for better
communication with their loved ones who have
physical or mental disabilities.
2
Heres a list of 7 easy ways of talking to a
senior with a disability.
  • Show Respect
  • Dont Treat Them as Kids
  • Relax While Talking to Them
  • Offer Help if Need Be
  • Some Seniors are Adaptable
  • 6. Dont Act in a Patronizing Way
  • 7. Speak to Them Directly

1 Show Respect
It is important for family caregivers to treat
their disabled loved one with respect. Always
remember to treat others the way you want to be
treated. View seniors with disabilities as
regular people and not mere impairments, which
can make it easier for you to interact with your
loved ones. It may hurt a senior to be treated as
special and child like, so show respect and
maintain a simple conversation with them.
4
2 Dont Treat Them as Kids
When talking to your loved ones with
disabilities, you should make sure to refrain
yourself from saying complicated things to them
whether or not they have difficulty
understanding. Treating your loved ones in a
childish way may annoy them. Speak slowly and
gently when talking to your loved ones who may
have hearing problems in order to prevent
confusion. You should keep your vocabulary simple
and may use hand gestures to make it simpler for
your loved one to understand the conversation.
5
3 Relax While Talking to Them
Most of the young people may have a habit of
talking fast which might confuse senior adults.
Dont rush things while talking to your senior
loved ones who may have some mental disabilities.
Be tolerant while talking to your loved ones as
they may take time thinking about what to say.
Ask simpler questions and wait for your loved one
to process it first before answering you. If your
loved one have some mental disability then it
might delay their response time.
6
4 Offer Help if Need Be
Some people think that offering help to seniors
with disabilities may turn out offensive. Seniors
with limited mobility may need help when going
for shopping and want someone to hold their bags.
Family caregivers can offer help to their loved
ones in a polite way which should not draw
attention to their disability.
7
5 Some Seniors are Adaptable
Some seniors who are born with disabilities may
adapt to their daily work routine and may see
outside help as unfriendly. Family caregivers
should make sure to offer sincere help to their
loved ones if need be. It may be annoying for
seniors with disabilities to see others doing
their every work. You should acknowledge first
whether your loved ones are capable to do a
certain task or not before giving them a helping
hand.
8
6 Dont Act in a Patronizing Way.
Most of the people with disabilities may feel
annoyed when others treat them in a condescending
or patronizing way. You should treat your loved
ones like you treat everyone else. Seniors with
disabilities should be treated with equal respect
which may take their mind off their mental or
physical impairment. Patting on the back or
bending down while talking to seniors with
limited mobility may feel offensive to them.
9
7 Speak to Them Directly
If seniors with disabilities have a nurse or a
translator then you should still talk to the
senior directly. As a result seniors may not feel
annoyed and think they are being equally
respected. Family caregivers should not use
offensive terms like crippled and handicapped
around their loved ones which can be
disrespectful and may hurt their feelings.
