Rafael Escamilla How to Prevent Injuries While
Powerlifting
Powerlifting is a sport that challenges
individuals strength and endurance. Rafael
Escamilla was a national and world powerlifting
champion in 1993, 1994 and 1995. During the
National Powerlifting Championships in 1995, at
179 bodyweight he full squatted nearly 650
pounds, bench pressed 400 pounds, and deadlifted
nearly 650 pounds. Powerlifting has three
components the squat, the bench press, and the
deadlift. Competitors are placed in division
based on their weight, age, experience, and
whether or not they are wearing protective gear.
This is a sport that requires years of weight
training experience and training. Powerlifters
regularly deal with large amounts of weight and
need to be careful not to hurt themselves.

Rafael Escamilla How to Train to be a
Powerlifter
Powerlifting is a test of strength, endurance,
and dedication. Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, CSCS,
is a licensed physical therapist, a biomechanist,
and a university professor. He is also a former
national and world champion powerlifter. In 1993,
1994, and 1995, he won national and world
powerlifting titles in drug free powerlifting
competition. In 1995, during the National
Powerlifting Championships, he weighed in at 179
pounds. He won the competition by full squatting
just under 650 pounds, bench pressing 400 pounds
exactly, and deadlifting just under 650 pounds.
He trained hard to reach that level, and was able
to go on to win the World Powerlifting
Championships that year as well. Athletes who
compete in powerlifting competitions need to be
