Definition of Bullying
  • Bullying is used to describe many types of
    behavior ranging from teasing or deliberately
    leaving an individual out of a social gathering
    to serious assault and abuse.
  • To intimidate or abuse.

Types of Bullying
  • Physical hitting, kicking, pushing, choking, and
    punching.
  • Verbal threatening, taunting, teasing, starting
    rumors, hate speech.
  • Exclusion from activities Children should not
    be allowed to systematically exclude others.

  • One incident of bullying happens every seven
    minutes.
  • Approximately 15 of students are either bullied
    regularly or are initiators of bullying behavior
    (Olweus, 1993).

  • The Center of Disease Control estimates that 81

Classroom ideas
  • Make sure classroom rules address bullying
  • Listen carefully when bullying concerns are
    raised
  • Create positive reward for friendly behavior and
    negative consequences for bullying
  • Hold regular classroom meetings
  • Use cooperative learning groups when teaching
  • Integrate bullying concept into curriculum
  • Role play bully situation and discuss appropriate
    solutions

Individual Interventions
  • Have serious talk with bully immediately
  • Document situation on Incident Report Form
  • Send clear message about zero tolerance
  • Assign consequences
  • Warn bully future behavior will be monitored
  • Involve parents when needed

Supporting the Victim
  • Talk with victim in private place as soon as
    possible
  • Document situation
  • Provide victim with information about plan of
    action
  • Remind victim to report any further bullying
  • Notify parents when necessary
