ONE Campaign
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is
actively engaged in advocacy on hunger and
justice issues.
3
ONE Campaign
Now, at a key point in history, the ELCA is
joining more than 90 human rights and faith-based
organizations in a coordinated effort to end
extreme poverty.
4
What is ONE?
A new effort to rally Americans, ONE by ONE, to
the cause of ending poverty in our world and
achieving the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs).
5
  • What are the MDGs?

In 2000, 189 countries, including the U.S.,
endorsed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
eight interrelated targets toward the elimination
of extreme poverty by 2015.
6
What are the Millennium Development Goals?
  • Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
  • Achieve Universal Primary Education
  • Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
  • Reduce Child Mortality

7
What are the Millennium Development Goals?
  • Improve Maternal Health
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases
  • Ensure Environmental Sustainability
  • Create a Global Partnership for Development

8
Why ONE?
Right now it is possible, through partnership
with the poorest countries in the world, to
provide what is needed medicines, education,
and infrastructure to break the cycle of
poverty. All were lacking is the political will
to take the steps necessary to do it.
9
Why ONE?
This is a life-saving effort, as over 8 million
people die each year because they lack even the
most basic resources.
10
Why ONE?
God calls Lutherans, and we reaffirm that call in
our affirmation of baptism, to strive for
justice and peace in all the earth. Raising our
voices together by affirming our support for the
MDGs will pressure those in power to make them a
priority.
11
Why ONE?
Nearly 800 million people do not get enough food,
and about 500 million people are chronically
malnourished. A third of children are
malnourished.
12
Why ONE?
Of the worlds 40 million people living with
HIV/AIDS, more than 93 live in developing
countries.
13
Why ONE?
In developing countries, 160 million pre-school
children are underweight.
14
Why ONE?
More than 840 million adults are illiterate - 538
million of them are women.
15
Why ONE?
1.2 billion people live without access to safe
drinking water.
16
Why ONE?
700 million people in Africa survive on less than
a dollar a day.
17
What are the goals of ONE?
The ONE Campaign seeks to engage Americans in
political advocacy in order to reach three main
objectives related to U.S. development aid, debt
relief, and trade.
18
What are the goals of ONE?
GOAL 1 Direct an additional ONE percent of the
U.S. budget toward poverty-focused development
assistance in the poorest countries.
19
Why aid?
  • The U.S. currently spends only 0.16 percent of
the U.S. budget on international development
assistance (approximately 11 billion per year)

20
Why aid?
  • An additional one percent of the U.S. budget to
fight poverty by 2010 would account for the
U.S.s proportionate share of the financing gap
needed to meet the MDGs by 2015.

21
Why aid?
  • Based on the projected U.S. budget for 2010, one
    percent equals 29 billion.

22
What are the goals of ONE?
Goal 2 100 debt cancellation for countries that
otherwise cannot achieve the MDGs.
23
Why debt?
  • For every 1 in aid, more than 13 comes back in
    debt repayments.
  • Each year Africa pays 14.5 billion to IMF and
    the World Bank.
  • More than 85 percent of the poorest countries
debt has yet to be canceled.

24
What are the goals of ONE?
Goal 3 Make the rules of international trade
fair, so that all countries have the opportunity
to benefit from the global economy.
25
Why trade?
  • The poorest 49 countries make up 10 percent of
the world population, but only 0.4 percent of
    world trade.
  • The prices of many poor countries key exports
    are at a 150-year low.

26
Why trade?
  • Rich countries spend 100 billion per year to
protect their markets with tariffs, quotas and
subsidies twice as much as they provide in aid
    for developing countries.
