Purpose

• We will test the effect of high doses of neutron
  radiation on the transparency of visible to near
  UV radiation in quartz fibers

Procedure

• We prepared fibers for exposure to the Intense
  Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne National
  Laboratory in Chicago Illinois.
• We exposed the fibers to approximately 20
  Gigarads of radiation in a two week period
• We tested the fibers after exposure and compared
  them to unexposed fibers

Preparing the fibers

• Fibers were stripped of their polyvinyl cladding
  using hot, concentrated sulfuric acid.

• Fibers were cleaved according to the
  recommendations of the manufacturer, Poly-micro

• Fibers were measured and spectra run using the
  digital spectrometer with a Xenon strobe source

Preparing the fibers

• Fibers were inserted into a pure aluminum tube
  and transferred to the radiation source

Fibers were radiated

• Fibers were lowered into the IPNS source at
  Argonne Laboratory
• Fibers were left there for 2 weeks
• Fibers were removed from the tube and returned to
  The University of Iowa for study
