Title: Apostrophes

1
Apostrophes
  • How and when to use them

2
What is an apostrophe?
  • It looks like a comma but we place it above
    the line of writing.
  • It takes up the space of a letter.
  • It is used for possessive nouns, contractions,
    and some plurals.

3
Why do we use them?3 Main Reasons
  • To show who owns what (possession)
  • To fill in for missing letters (contractions)
  • For the plural form of a letter, numeral or a
word referred to as a word

4
To show who owns what (Form the possessive of
any noun, be it singular or plural)
  • Janes cat
  • Sams baseball
  • The players uniforms
  • The womens team

5
Contractions
  • When two words are joined together in a shorter
    form.
  • The apostrophe takes the place of the missing
    letter(s).
  • I am (Im)
  • They are (Theyre)
  • Do not (dont)

6
For the plural form of a letter, numeral or a
word referred to as a word
  • Your is look like es.
  • How many 6s are in her phone ?
  • The coach was full of next times and too bads.

7
  • Be careful! There are some confusing words out
    there!

8
YOU'RE YOUR
  • "You're" is short for "you are". You're a
hard working student. "Your" is used to show
possession. This is your cell phone.

9
IT'S AND ITS
  • "It's" is short for "it has" or "it is".
  • It's stopped raining, and it's sunny.
"Its", on the other hand, is similar to "his"
and "her" and is used to show possession. I'm
near the car.  I can see its license plate.

10
Whose and whos
  • Whos replaces who is
  • Whos coming to dinner?
  • Whose is possessive
  • Whose book is this?

11
Shouldve
  •  NOT SHOULD OF "Should've" sounds like "should
of", but it is short for "should have". (This is
the same for "could've" and "would've".)

12
Cannot
  • "Cannot" is one word.
  • I cannot stand in the hot sun for too long.

13
 NO APOSTROPHE
  • Words like "ours", "theirs", "yours" and "hers"
do not have apostrophes in them. These books
are ours. You cannot use our's.

14
Test Yourself
  • You are - ?
  • Will not - ?
  • I would - ?
  • I had - ?
  • We have - ?
  • I shall not - ?

15

  • Shes got her mothers smile, hasnt she?
