BACKGOUND TO ASSET MANAGEMENT AND THE DESIGN OF
BURIED GRAVITY PIPELINES FOR SUSTAINABILITY
SEMINAR THEME Installation, operation and
maintenance of utility networks in particular
large diameter gravity pipelines as used for
sewers and stormwater outfalls in urban areas
pose severe problems that incur social and
environment costs in addition to the initial
capital outlay. Many of these problems can be
minimised or even eliminated by paying attention
to the impact of decisions on the triple bottom
line (capital, social and environmental costs)
during planning and design of these assets. The
No-Dig and minimum dig concepts are now being
used more and more in the cities of the developed
world for inspecting, installing, rehabilitating
and replacing buried services to provide
sustainable infrastructure that has the minimal
overall impact on the triple bottom line
criteria. The effective and efficient
achievement of these requirements is dependant
upon the understanding and appropriate use of the
various technologies available. The purpose of
these seminars is to introduce the triple bottom
line concept, its contribution towards providing
sustainable infrastructural assets and to show
how the various facets of Trenchless Technology
(TT) can contribute towards realising this.
  • PRESENTATIONS
  • The key note speaker will be Josephine Parker MBE
who gave the opening address at the 2006
    International No-Dig in Brisbane titled
    Sustainability and social issues An
international perspective. At this seminar her
    paper will cover
  • The triple bottom line and sustainability
  • Social environmental issues driving the use
  • of TT
  • Contribution of TT towards sustainability
  • Glen Derman will present a paper on CCTV
    inspection condition assessment that will
include the latest developments in this field
were the visual records captured are supplemented
by laser profiling to obtain dimensional detail
inside the pipeline. This combination of
information provides the engineer with valuable
detail for designing new and rehabilitating old
    sewers.
  • Alaster Goyns paper will cover Design of new
sewers and estimating life of existing sewers and
how the design procedures that are equally
applicable can be supplemented with the
information gained from the condition assessment
of existing sewers that provides information on
how various materials have performed under local
    conditions.
  • Venance da Silva will close the afternoon with a
presentation on Case studies Choice of
    rehabilitation technology.

This will cover several recent projects involving
sewers that needed rehabilitation and how the
above principles were applied.
SPEAKERS Josephine Parker is director of
Watershed Associates, United Kingdom. She has 30
years experience in the international water
industry with particular expertise in the
management of buried assets. She was awarded the
MBE in 1996 for her services to the water
industry. Glen is the MD of Sight Lines and the
immediate past president of SASTT. His
involvement with the manufacture and use of CCTV
cameras goes back 14 years. Alaster is a
specialist consultant who focuses on buried
gravity pipeline and TT. He has been involved in
the concrete pipe industry for 30 years and with
TT for over 15 years. He has served two terms as
president of SASTT and is a long serving member
of CSSA. Venance is a director of Afri-Coast
Engineers based in PE. He has been in private
practice for the past 10 years, specialising in
water and sanitation and the rehabilitation of
concrete. He is also the immediate past
president of CSSA. At each of these seminars a
representative of a local authority will be asked
to do a closing address.
