New Thesis Unit Codes

• Time-Based Thesis Units
• When SAMS is implemented, all research thesis
  units will change to time-based units, rather
  than credit point based units.
• Coursework units will be included in overall
  credit points. Units will be subsumed. For
  example
• IFN001 12 credit points
• IFT812 (Thesis Unit Code) remainder of
  credit points

• Currently, faculties are asked to provide
• FOR (previously RFCD), SEO and AOU codes.
• When SAMS is implemented, faculties will also be
  asked to provide
• FOE and thesis unit codes.
• The University is required to allocate a Field of
  Education to all research higher degree
  candidates. This is reported to the Federal
  government in each DEEWR (Department of
  Education, Employment and Workplace Relations)
  Submission, and is used by the Federal government
  when allocating funding to the University under
  the Research Training Scheme (RTS).
• The full list of ASCED codes is available from
  the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The list of
  high-cost Fields of Education for the RTS is
  available from DEEWR in the "RTS RPS
  process calculations" document.

• How to Assign Thesis Unit Codes
• When SAMS is implemented, QUT HDR Thesis codes
  will be based on the thesis area and correspond
  to Field of Education codes (FOE). FOE codes and
  discipline areas will assist you to determine the
  correct thesis code.
• A list of FOE codes can be found at the
  Australian Bureau of Statistics.
• The first four digits of the FOE code correspond
  to the Fields column in the table (see below).
  Please ensure that the relevant high or low cost
  category is chosen and the relevant course level.
  
• For example, a PhD students thesis topic is
  identified as a Mathematics topic with an FOE
  code of 010101. The first four digits (0101) of
  the FOE need to be matched up with the Fields
  column in the table.
