3
What is AGEC?
  • AGEC stands for Arizona General Education
    Curriculum.
  • AGEC is a 35 hour block of lower division,
general education curriculum that fulfills the
lower division general education requirements at
any AZ public community college or university.
  • The purpose of AGEC is to provide AZ Community
College students with the opportunity to build a
    general education curriculum that, when
completed, is transferable to another AZ
community college or university without loss of
    credit.
  • AGEC is the best way to make your credits count
    for most transfer degrees

4
What IS AGEC?
  • AGEC is a statewide agreement between NAU, ASU, U
of A, and all AZ public community colleges.
  • A completed AGEC will transfer as a block to meet
lower division general education requirements at
any of the AZ public universities or other AZ
    community colleges.
  • Transfer students who wish to earn the associate
degree must then meet additional CCC
    requirements.
  • To earn the bachelors degree, students
transferring the AGEC must still meet course
    prerequisites, major, requirements, and upper
division requirements at their chosen university.
  • There are three forms of AGEC, AGEC-A, AGEC-B,and
    AGEC-S.

5
What IS AGEC?
  • AGEC-A is a 35-credit lower division general
education curriculum block that fulfills the
lower division general education requirements of
liberal arts majors (e.g. Fine Arts/ visual Arts,
    Psychology, Sociology).
  • AGEC-B is a 35 credit lower division general
education curriculum block that fulfills the
lower division general education requirements of
    business majors (e.g. Business Administration,
    Computer Information Systems).
  • AGEC-S is a 35-credit lower division general
education curriculum block that fulfills the
lower division general education requirements of
majors with more stringent mathematics and
    mathematics-based Science requirements (e.g.
    Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

6
What is AGEC?
  • AGEC-A, AGEC-B, and AGEC-S can be completed
separately or as part of an Associate degree at
CCC and must include specific special
requirements that will be presented later. The
college certifies completion of the AGEC on the
    official transcript

7

Why complete an AGEC?
  • A completed AGEC waives all admission
requirements at AZs three public universities.
  • This means that you are unconditionally admitted
to the AZ public. university of your choice (but
not into a specific program) after completing an
    AGEC.
  • AGEC satisfies ALL lower division liberal studies
requirements at all AZ public universities.
  • For most majors, a completed AGEC along with
other appropriate (i.e. electives and common
major) transferable courses, allows you to enter
AZ universities with junior standing (see an
    advisor for more info)

21
Why Complete an AGEC?
  • Save by completing all of your lower division
liberal studies at CCC! Our tuition rates are (on
the average) about 1/3 the cost of the AZ public
    universities.
  • Our classes are generally smaller than freshman
/sophomore liberal studies courses at the
    universities.
  • CLEP and high school concurrent enrollment
credits can also count toward an AGEC and will
transfer to an AZ public university.

22
What If You dont Complete an AGEC?
  • If you do not complete an AGEC, you will need to
    meet standard university requirements.
  • If you do not complete an AGEC you will need to
complete liberal studies requirements which may
not be the same as CCCs general education
    requirements.
  • If you do not complete an AGEC, your general
education courses will be evaluated one by one
using the Course Equivalency Guide (CEG) instead
of being transferred as a general education
block, satisfying ALL lower division general
    education requirements.

23
When isnt an AGEC Necessary?
  • Some university majors require you to take very
specific courses from the beginning of your
college education. See an advisor, regarding
these majors, to discuss an academic plan.
  • Remember, AGEC stands for Arizona General
Education Curriculum. If you are planning to
transfer to an institution outside of AZ, none of
the guarantees previously mentioned apply. You
will need to contact the out of state institution
to see how your coursework will transfer.

24
Why Complete a Transfer Degree
  • ALL CCC transfer degrees contain an AGEC. So
transfer degrees give you an AGEC and more.
  • You may be able to transfer into the university
as a junior (see an advisor for more
    information).
  • You will have an associate degree, making you
more competitive in the job market.

25
Tips for Transfer Students
  • Explore your career interest to help you decide
    on a major early.
  • Remember, AZ public universities use only 64
    transferable credit hours toward your
    baccalaureate degree.
  • See an advisor as soon as possible. The earlier
you develop an education plan with an advisor,
the less of a chance you have of losing credits
after transferring to an AZ public university.
Dont wait until you almost graduate to see an
    advisor.

26
Conclusion
  • In this presentation, you have looked at the
    following
  • What an AGEC is.
  • What an AGEC looks like.
  • Why Complete an AGEC?,
  • Why Complete a Transfer Degree?,
  • What if You dont Complete an AGEC?,
  • When isnt an AGEC Necessary?

You are ready to take the first step toward
completing the Arizona General Education
Curriculum (AGEC)!
