Saying something is wrong is apparently not
always enough to prevent you from doing it.
  • In a survey of 18,000 U.S. college students in
    2003 (CQ 9/03)
  • 40 said they had plagiarized using conventional
    books, journals and other sources.
  • In a 2002 national survey by Rutgers' Management
    Education Center of 4,500 students
  • More than half have plagiarized work they found
    on the Internet.

5
While it is easy to say that plagiarism is wrong,
it is also easy to plagiarize
  • 38 admitted to one or more instances of
    Internet- cut-and-paste (Rutgers Study)

6
There are certain pressures, which can lead to
one plagiarizing the work of another
EXCUSES
Educators say todays students dont understand
what plagiarism is or dont consider it as
serious cheating

Many blame plagiarizing on the pressures of
deadlines

  • deliberate, when a student takes the work of
another and claims it is his or her own.
  • Gray area, when a student, fails to cite
anothers work and its unclear as to whether it
    was intentional or accidental.
  • Accidental, when a source has been cited
    incorrectly.

Deliberate Plagiarism
Accidental Plagiarism
  • cutting pasting from the Internet
  • having someone else write your paper
  • buying a paper
  • Paraphrasing incorrectly
