There are around 120 video formats currently
in existence and continually rising. As a video
production team, we find that client rarely have
any idea of which format is best for them, so
this rough guide is designed to help you focus on
what is important to ensure you distribute your
video effectively online.
3
A Quick Lesson on Video Formats
  • Video files are subject to be heavy files in
    comparison to any other media,
  • for example, still photographs. As a consequence,
    experts have come up
  • with a variety of clever ways to reduce file
size, so that the video would
  • take least buffering time over the Internet and
as a result, we have a
  • huge variety of video formats, each with their
    own pros and cons.

4
So What File Format Should You Choose?
  • The important thing is to choose a file format
    that is capable enough to
  • deliver a good quality video to your viewers on
    whichever device they
  • might be using including PC, Mac, iPhone,
    Android, Samsung, iPad and
  • many more.

5
So What File Format Should You Choose?
  • All of these take in a wide variety of formats
    but remember MOV file
  • often used, in the majority of cases. MOV is a
    QuickTime file with H.264
  • codec, encoded specifically for online streaming
    for maximum quality in
  • order for this to be viewable by everybody.
Choose a video file format that
  • ensures all round playability on each device.

6
The Dimensions
  • The amount of dots on the screen, or pixels
    that determines the space
  • your video will take up on your web page. It is
    also critical to the
  • sharpness of each frame when it is fully expanded
    on big screen.
  • In this case, we recommend uploading your video
    at 1280 x 720 pixels
  • which is certainly huge enough to fill up the
    computer screen with a crisp
  • and detailed picture, while keeping the file size
    manageable for internet
  • delivery. As online transfer of videos becomes
    faster, this will increase,
  • but for now 1280 x 720 gives better picture
    quality with future reliability of
  • playback fit into any page or social media
    sites without any error.

7
The Aspect Ratio
  • Aspect ratio tells the ratio of the width to the
    height of a screen. This
  • means that the magnitude of a frame is in the
ratio of 16 pixels across to 9
  • pixels down. For example, a video exported at
    1280 pixels would give a
  • depth of 1280 x 9/16 720 pixels down.
  • So it is better to stay with standard aspect
    ratio.
