Demographic Information
  • Hillsborough County, Florida
  • 8th largest school district in the nation, 3rd
    largest in Florida
  • Over 200,000 students in 235 schools and centers
  • Approximately the size of Rhode Island with
    urban, rural and suburban areas
  • More than 52 of the student body is eligible for
    federal free reduced price meals
  • At 23 of our Title I sites, over 90 of the
    students are eligible for free and reduced price
    meals

  • Goal Expand and enhance Hillsborough County
    Public Schools
  • Voluntary Public School Choice
    Program
  • Objective 1 Provide a wide variety of choices to
    all students in participating schools
  • Objective 2 Increase the percentage of students
    at low-performing schools who have the
    opportunity to attend high-performing schools.
  • Objective 3 Improve the academic achievement of
    secondary school students who are at greatest
    risk of not meeting challenging academic
    standards and not completing high school.

  • Enrollment patterns for students new to the
    Hillsborough Choice program exceeded targeted
    goals for the 2004/2005 , 2005/2006, 2006/2007
    and 2007/2008 school years with 60.4, 69.7,
    16.69 and 7.72 of students enrolling in a
    higher performing school as defined by AYP
    criteria.

    choice option during 2004/2005, 2005/2006 and
    2006/2007 school years demonstrated statistically
    significant achievement gains in reading
    (t19.54, 22.83, 9,99, p lt 0.05) and mathematics
