Overview of the Corps
  • The Connecticut Area Health Education Center
    (AHEC) developed this three tier, eight module
    curriculum for those who are interested in
    serving their communities.

Our Mission
  • To prepare health professionals and other
    interested community members to volunteer in
    settings that serve marginalized populations and
    to increase awareness of careers in health care
    delivery and public health.

Tier 1 Entry Level
  • Participants will take a knowledge based pre
    post test and must get at least 95 correct to be
    considered as having mastered the core
    curriculum.
  • At least 25 hours of service learning is also
    required to complete this tier.

Tier 1 Core Curriculum
  • Understanding Marginalized Populations
  • Legal and Ethical Issues
  • Universal Precautions

Tier 2 Health Corps Volunteer
  • The minimum volunteer time commitment is 50
    hours that is satisfactorily completed
    (cumulating a total of 75 hours of service
    learning)
  • A rating of 95 correct for each of the Tier 2
    on-line courses.

Tier 2 Required Curriculum
  • Cultural Competencies Health Literacy
  • Health Education and Disease Prevention
  • Data Collection
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Peer Education and Leadership

Tier III
  • An overall accumulation of 75 hours of service
    learning results in Tier III recognition.

Graduates
  • Graduates of Tier III are qualified to teach and
    mentor the Youth and College Health Service
    Corps. Exposure to teaching and mentoring is thus
    a function of the program, as well as
    contributing to a sustainability plan by
    utilizing the student body to support the
    program.

Optional Curriculum
  • CPR and AED
  • Training by a certified instructor of the
    American Heart Association
  • First Aid
  • Training by a certified instructor of the
    American Red Cross Association

First Aid and CPR Certification will be offered
two times a year. Eligible participants must
complete Tier I

Reflection
  • Quarterly social gatherings will take place for
    participants to process and reflect on their
    service learning experiences with Eastern AHEC
    and agency staff, and community members at-large.
