  • With such a diverse musical genre like Hip Hop,
it is no surprise that many sub styles have
emerged under it. You have probably heard of many
of them like Chopped and Screwed, Gangsta Rap,
and Jerkin'. However, there is one sub genre of
Hip Hop that is controversial, unique, and
somewhat wrong in most people's eyes. This genre
is Horrorcore. The actual name of the music might
not sound familiar but you probably have heard of
some of the popular artists if you are a Hip Hop
fan. Horrorcore music doesn't generally do well
in terms of record sales, but the following of
Horrorcore music is bigger than most people
    believe.

  • Horrorcore Hip Hop is basically defined exactly
how it sounds. Violence is a common theme in many
of the most prolific Horrorcore tracks. Other
popular themes have to do with religion and
demons and cannibalism. If this doesn't sound
like music that you would like, you are most
likely not alone. Just like reading a book or
watching a movie, don't judge the creator of the
music as crazy. It is just a different style of
music that is made for entertainment. You don't
think that horror novelists are crazy. So why do
Horrorcore musicians get such a bad reputation
when they are only entertaining the fans? That
may not convince you to start liking Horrorcore.
However, there are millions of people everywhere
that love this unique style. You can probably
understand the genre a lot more if you know some
of the artists that are generally associated with
    Horrorcore.

  • Many people believe that ICP leads the Horrorcore
group of musicians, which is a valid statement.
They have actually had mainstream success while
staying in the underground Horrorcore scene. They
also have one of the biggest fan following of any
Hip Hop act that call themselves the Juggalos.
Some other notable Horrorcore artists include
Tech N9ne, Necro, Brotha Lynch Hung, Esham, and
Blaze Ya Dead Homie. A lot of Horrorcore music is
released online only because it doesn't appeal to
a mainstream audience. That is why many of the
popular artists release all of their music
online, some free and some for sale. Horrorcore
music is very prevalent in the underground Hip
    Hop scene as well.

  • The lyrical content of Horrorcore isn't the only
unique aspect. The beats used in Horrorcore music
are very different than any other Hip Hop style.
The instrumentals used are very dark and sound
like they came straight out of a Horror movie.
One notable Horrorcore artist, Mars, said that he
is just like Stephen King and Wes Craven, only
with an instrumental in the background. While
Horrorcore themes date all the way back to the
    80s, Horrorcore wasn't really coined until 1994.
Horrorcore music has the tendency to tell stories
in the song instead of the normal Hip Hop lyrical
content. The best Horrorcore artists are very
good a painting a picture for the listeners to
    imagine while the song plays.

  • Horrorcore music has turned off many listeners
due to gruesome lyrics. Those people don't
realize that this music is purely for
entertainment, just like watching a movie or
reading a book. These musicians are artists and
are showing their creative side through
developing horror stories in a Hip Hop song. The
lyrical content of these artists is a lot more
complex than many of the most popular Hip Hop
artists today. Just like you don't judge a book
by its cover, you shouldn't judge a person by the
lyrics that they portray in Horrorcore music.
