Background of EMBARK
  • I aim to give a broad overview, but first
    IRCSET
  • Chaired by Prof. Jane Grimson, with a Council of
    representatives from research institutions and
    industry
  • Mission is to train researchers of the first rank
and to promote excellence across a broad range of
research in science, engineering and technology.
  • Does not exclusively target research projects
with an industrial or economic focus but instead
aims to support researchers in exploring ideas
    and bringing vision to reality
  • Presentation should be on site shortly
    GradIreland.

Do not expect career to be linear
6
Topic for Postgrad Research
  • Have you a strong interest in a particular field
    of research?
  • What experiences have you of actually working in
that discipline examples might include summer
work, tutorials or any exposure to postgraduates
    already working in it.
  • Will the requirements of developing a career in
that field suit your desired behaviour office
    work, laboratory environment, field work,
    intensive work on computers?
  • Look at some current papers related to the PhD
topic of interest how dynamic is the field, how
available are the data, are you interested in
reading the material even if it stretches your
    comprehension at this point?

7
Supervisor search
  • This will be a relationship for 3-4 years and you
need to get a feel for how it might work. Try to
spend time with them informally how do they
operate with their existing postgraduates, how do
they publish, and what conferences do they
    contribute to?
  • Talk to their current candidates and see how
often they meet, what structure there is to
    meetings, how is progress monitored.
  • What is the usual completion time for a PhD under
their supervision and what do the doctorates go
on to as their next career step?

8
Where?
  • Question whether you should continue at your
    undergraduate location.
  • Wide variety of scale, funding and research
    orientation postgrad culture.
  • Is the institution / supervisor known for
research in your desired topic area?
  • Is there a handbook for graduate students and an
    induction programme?
  • Only then look at funding availability.

9
Funding search
  • Respond to call for proposals from one of the
    organisations listed in the following
  • Identify the supervisor / research team and talk
    to them
  • Follow the money watch for project based
announcements in your chosen field and go
    convince them they need you.
