MHS LIBRARY SERVICES

There is a wealth of information on the Library
Web Page. The Coastline button on the left,
connects you to the public libraries in Coos
County. The OPAC connects you to the MHS card
catalogue. The General Portals link connects to
databases (most we subscribe to, some are free).
Teacher Pages has a link displaying titles in the
English Paperback room, available to English
Teachers. The page also has other useful
information. Take some time to explore the links.
4
EBSCO HOST is one of the most powerful database
for research. Options exist for selecting
specific Lexile and/or reading levels, selecting
a search in a foreign language, using Boolean
terms, or using an interface geared to the age
appropriateness of the learner. The Help Menu in
the task bar guides the user to step-by-step
directions on how to use EBSCO databases. Opposing
Viewpoints is used a lot by the history and
forensics departments. There are wealth of
topics that offer two or more perspectives in
this database. (It is worth noting that the
library has hardcopy of many of the Opposing
Viewpoint topics. These books can be viewed by
going to the OPAC, clicking on Projects and
typing in Opposing Viewpoint Topics.) NewsBank
and the Oregonian is a great resource for current
events. It has a Hot Topics feature that gives
suggestions for topics of research in the
different discipline areas. Novelist allows
students to search for new book titles with
descriptors similar to a book they read and
enjoyed. The library does not necessarily have
the recommended titles, but it helps us build a
list of new ones to add, or guides the user to
another library service such as the public
library.
5
OPAC - The On line Public Accessed Catalog is
opened from the MHS Library Web Page. At the
high school, it defaults to the Advanced search.
Notice the typical drop down arrows next to
different search parameters. Also notice that
there is a Projects button at the top of the
screen. This option can be very valuable to
staff who create Reading Lists for their class.
In the sample search shown in the next slide,
the Keyword search mollusks was typed in.
6
OPAC contd
10 Titles matched the Keyword search. Notice the
Call No, the Title and the Authors, fields are in
a bold blue color. That means, you can rearrange
the order of the books in that search. The last
column lets you know whether or not a book is in.
By clicking on the title, you can access the
MARC record of the book which will display the
summary, number of pages, cross references and
other useful information (next slide)
7
OPAC contd
8
OPAC - Projects Tab
Teachers may ask the Librarian to put together
reading lists for their class. The sample below
shows what happens when the Projects Tab is
clicked, and the name Peters is typed in the
search box.
Peters has 4 lists for his Honors classes.
Clicking on the 1st list displays the titles on
that list (below).
Clicking on the title gives specific information
about that title such as a summary, number of
pages and genre or subject (next slide).
9
OPAC - Projects Tab contd
Clicking the Next tab, shows the summary of the
next book on the list (note there are a total of
87 titles and this result is on title number 1).
Clicking on the Result List tab returns to the
original list.
10
Anderson - Scantron Machine
Many teachers who give final exams or weekly
quizzes give objective tests. Using Scantron
sheets to bubble in answers allows the teacher
to score tests quickly. There is a Anderson
Scantron machine located in each building. The
unit is in the library for those in the Main and
in the office area for those in Pirate Hall.
You can get the sheets from the library (if you
work in the Main) or the office (if you work in
Pirate Hall). The process gives you results
quickly and is very easy to use.
11
Computer Labs - Scheduling Use
The library has A Mini Lab of 7 computers in a
side room. This facility is used mostly by
student drop ins. That means a student will come
in from a class (with a pass) from a staff member
indicating the desire to use the computer for
word processing, research, etc. The student has
to have signed parental permission to use the
Internet and it has to be current. Most of them
got their consent forms at registration. You can
find out if a student has permission or not, by
logging onto eSIS. Because there is only 1
librarian on duty during lunch, the mini lab is
the only lab open.
12
Library Lab - Main
The main Library Computer Lab has 36 student
computers and one staff computer. The staff
computer is hooked up to an LCD projector so you
can demonstrate the sites you are accessing or
programs with which you are working. To schedule
lab time, you can call the library, email or come
in and sign up on your own. The sign up book is
on the bookshelf next to the OPACS. The sign up
book is labeled. We keep a daily lab schedule on
the circulation desk indicating who has
scheduled the lab and the periods they have
scheduled it. There is a power point on the MHS
Library Web Page in the in the Tutorials Web
quests link, titled Library Computer Lab Rules.
We ask that you take all of your classes through
this power point, the first time you use the lab
during the first trimester.
13
Library Lab Main Student Use during Study
Hall/Office Hours
Students may use the computer lab during Study
Hall/Office Hours provided they stop by the
library the night before or the morning of their
Advisory Period and get an Office Hours Pass.
This computer lab time is for students who need
to use the computer to complete a class
assignment. If there is a question as to whether
or not a students use of the Computer Lab is
sincere, we will investigate it. Illegitimate
use of the lab will carry a set of consequences.

Library Lab Main contd Protocol for requests
to IT regarding Internet sites
Select a Site you want to use with your students
There is a PROTOCOL for checking to see if your
STUDENTS can access the site(s) you want them to
when they come into the lab. The ability to
access sites on the student computers has to be
monitored. For that reason, most sites requiring
the install of Active X on the fly, are not going
to work unless tech has tested it. It is
possible for your students to gain access to
specific sites, if you plan for this ahead of
time.
Review the site on your desktop which has Staff
permissions. Take notes on special requirements
(e.g. Log Ins, passwords, Active X)
Try the site you want students to use on their
student computers (e.g. computers in library lab)
to see if they can access what you want.
If certain applications on the student computers
do not work, submit a task request to Technical
Support via School Dude so they can review the
site and possibly get it running for you.
15
Library Lab Main New Protocol contd
Step 1 Check to see what kinds of applications
(Shock Wave, Active X) may be needed to run the
tutorials, lessons, etc. you want your students
to access ON A STUDENT COMPUTER. If you only
check on your own computer, you wont get a clear
picture because you have permissions that
students do NOT have. All the computers in the
Main Lab and Mini Lab are student computers.
Step 2 To prepare for a Task Request on School
Dude do some leg work first and take notes. You
can begin by surfing the site on your computer.
If the application asks you to install Active X
to run it, make a notation that you can
communicate to Technical Support.
Step 3 If you have determined your students
cannot access the tutorials, lessons, etc. you
want them to use (when they are on the students
computer) then you need to go to School Dude and
submit a request to have the lessons/tutorials
activated. Refer to the notes you have taken, so
you can be specific in your request.
16
the LCD Projector Staff Computer
The computer hooked up to the LCD projector has
staff permissions, which means it has more
drives than the student computers. We have
switched out the current computer monitor screen
on the staff computer with one with USB ports.
That makes it easier for you to plug in your
thumb drives.
17
WiFi Access
Patrons who have a laptop with a wireless card
can get on line from most places on campus. The
directions for doing this are posted in the Teen
Area of the library.
18
Media - for Staff Check out
If you need a TV-VCR-DVD-LCD to use for class
instruction, chances are good that we can provide
them on a temporary (NOT a permanent) check out
basis. We have enough overhead projectors, that
we can permanently assign one to you for the
year. You check it back in at the end of the
school year. We also have a remote control for
your classroom TV. It is checked out to you at
the beginning of the year and has to be returned
before you go home for the summer. Other media
available for checkout include Movie Cameras,
Cassette Recorders, Discman, and P.A. systems.
Various and sundry other things available are
batteries, extension cords, screens, easels, and
multi outlets. Notify us of your need and we will
schedule it for you. You can pick it up and
return the equipment after school.
19
DVDs VHS for Staff
A list of available Videos and DVDs for classroom
list is available on the MHS Library web page
under the Teachers Page Link. These items are
checked out by using a blue check out card that
is taped to every disk or tape. The items
themselves are in the Video Room located at the
back of the library. Some videos you show may
have a PG or higher rating. A Parent permission
form is also available on the Teachers Page.
20
UPS United Postal Service
  • MHS handles the UPS service for the entire
district. We try to get to these items in a
timely fashion (within 2 school days). Items that
need to be shipped UPS can be brought to the
library UNWRAPPED. We need to know
  • The Name of the person who is having the item
    mailed
  • The Declared Value of the item(s) being shipped
  • The address to where the item is to be shipped
  • The club account or department that is to be
    billed for the shipping
  • Special shipping directions, if any

21
I.D. CARDS STAFF STUDENT
If a staff or student needs a new or replacement
ID card, the librarians will make one. Students
may come to the library during lunch time on
Wednesdays to have a new card made. We begin
making these I.D. cards the first Wednesday after
Life Touch has visited the campus to do picture
retakes.
22
LAMINATING
We can laminate objects for staff that are up to
26 inches wide. The items to be laminated can be
put in the laminating box in the Video Room of
the library. We laminate on Wednesdays. You
can come by the library any time after Wednesday
and pick up your items. If you have a large
number of items in need of laminating, that
project might take awhile. Check with us to
monitor the progress.
23
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
Audio books in the form of Playaways, CDs, and
cassettes are all available for check out. The
Oregon Collection has a wealth of books on Oregon
History many of which deal with the Coos Bay
Area. Some students owe too much in fines to use
the greater library collection. For them we have
a section of Donation Books. We keep track of
the donated books via a data base. For our
Spanish speaking patrons, we have quite a
selection of books in Spanish. We subscribe to
4 Newspapers USA today The Oregonian The
Register-Guard The World and get a
complimentary copy of the Marshfield Times. We
also subscribe to 36 Magazines. The titles are
available on the MHS Library Web Site Student
Resources Magazines in Library. Students are
allowed to check out back issues of a magazine.
24
TEXTBOOKS
Currently the library handles the following
textbook tasks processing, distribution,
collection, repair, resell, withdrawal, student
billing information. and supplementary
requisitions. Surplus books are stored in the
textbook room. We have approximately 7,400
barcoded and 1,000 that are not. Before staff
leaves campus for the summer it is important for
them to let the library know which books they
want distributed to their classes in the Fall, so
we can get those titles rounded up. We often
prepare classroom sets for teachers.
25
English Paperback Room
The English Paperback Room houses approximately
225 titles the department uses for instruction.
Approximately 10,300 copies have been barcoded to
date, with another thousand yet to do. A list of
available titles is on the MHS Library Web Page
under Teacher Pages.
