Where to Begin Researching
  • Check appropriate books
  • Try a database
  • Then try known educational websites.
  • If that doesnt work, then try a general Internet
    search.

Database Use Tips
  • Check the full text box to make sure to get the
    whole article.
  • Make sure key word search is used on the subject
line of the search engine and not on the author

  • Always check the article length and do a print

Database or Internet?
  • Databases include information from magazines
  • Theres no editor reviewing most web sites.
  • Databases are created with education in mind.
  • Web sites are created by authors with many
    motives.
  • Items in the database were reviewed by teachers.
  • No one polices the Internet for misinformation or
    plagiarism.

33
Web Searching TipsCheck the location!

34
Search Limitations for Internet or Databases
  • Use quotes to search exact phrases, like cancer
    cells
  • Instead of quotes, you can also improve your
search by using or and, like cancercells.
  • Excluding words can help too. If you want to
find historic information on pirates, use not
or the minus symbol. For example pirates not
    movie not Caribbean
  • Use combinations of tools to search. Like
    pirateshistory-movie-Pittsburgh

35
Problems of Internet Research
  • sometimes out-of-date info is not removed
  • sources may contain plagiarized information
  • biased people with agendas create web sites
  • facts are not verified
  • lots of potential biased or inappropriate
    material
  • takes too much time?
  • overwhelming amounts of
  • irrelevant information

36
Advantages ofInternet Research
  • current information
  • can find primary sources
  • access to a wide variety of people
  • unique information not found in books
  • lots of potential for multi-media
  • saves time?
  • can have exactly
  • what you need

37
Web Searching Tips
  • Search using a Webquest.
  • Use your search engine. Enter your topic into the
search box add the word webquest.
  • Use kids search engines for basic
  • information Ask Jeeves for Kids, Kids Click, or
    Yahooligans.
  • Limit your searches to just .edu, .org, or .gov
    sites. Use Search Edu.
  • Use online encyclopedias.

39
Web Site Evaluation
  • Check to see if contact info, sources cited, date
of last update, and cited sources are listed.
  • See if there is an about page.
  • Consider the motives of the author. Why do you
think s/he made this page? Is it for students?
  • Pay attention to the web address ending.

40
More Website Evaluation Questions
  • Notice the warning signs bad spelling,
emotional writing, exclamation points and caps.
  • When in doubt, ask questions. Could you find the
same information on other sites or in other
sources? Never rely on just one source.

41
Some Rules and Realities of Research
  • Research takes time.
  • Revise. Revise. Revise!
  • Stay calm.
  • Bookmark!
  • When in doubt, write it down.
  • Research is frustrating.
  • Research takes practice.
  • Research can be done quickly and effectively.
